?

Tennessee Sports Writers AssociationOhio Valley ConferenceNashville, TN ? Senior forward Emily Perkins, of the Austin Peay State University women?s soccer team, has been named the Tennessee Sports Writers Association Women?s Soccer Player of the Week and Co-Offensive Player of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference.

APSU Emily Perkins

She?s the first Lady Govs soccer player to earn a TSWA award. In sharing the weekly conference award with UT Martin?s Abi Sanvee, Perkins makes it back-to-back weeks a Lady Gov picked up a conference honor; juniors Tatiana Ariza (Offensive) and Haylee Shoaff (Goalkeeper) picked up awards last week.

Perkins scored both game-winning goals in Austin Peay victories at Morehead State and against Eastern Kentucky last week, helping the Lady Govs clinch a first-round bye in this week?s Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, hosted by UT Martin.

The Nashville, Tennessee, native scored in the 20th minute, Friday on a pass from Andy Quiceno in a 1-0 victory at Morehead State. Perkins assisted on Tatiana Ariza?s 13th-minute goal then scored the eventual game-winner in the 24th minute in a 2-1 win, Sunday, versus Eastern Kentucky. She has now 14 career goals in two seasons at APSU, tying for third on the all-time list with Jessica Hosse (2004-07).

Perkins has 20 points this season, tied for third in the OVC, and four game-winning goals, tied for first in the conference along with Ariza. The Lady Govs play Friday in the semifinals of the OVC Tournament against the winner of Thursday?s quarterfinal match between SIU Edwardsville and Eastern Kentucky.

Wellness Matters: Darker days are coming ? don't fall victim to ...

By Marty Seitz
Access Wellness Group
?

I hate to be a prophet of doom, but darker days are coming, and you may fall under their spell.
?

As the daylight dwindles, you may find yourself falling prey to full-blown SADness (Seasonal Affective Disorder), or you may encounter its somewhat less severe form, SAS (Seasonal Affective Syndrome). Both are types of depression, just to different degrees.
?

The symptoms can include one or more of the following: (1) feeling more tired than usual; (2) having decreased interest in or pleasure from activities you used to enjoy; (3) withdrawing from family and friends; (4) eating more than usual; and (5) consequently gaining weight. Not everyone who develops SAD experiences all of these symptoms, and some may also experience growing irritability, depressed/sad mood (hence the acronym SAD) and an increasingly dim view of themselves, others, their lives and their future.
?

A full-blown case of SAD significantly impairs a person?s ability to function in his or her job and/or in his or her social roles. With the milder form that I?m calling Seasonal Affective Syndrome, a person may still be able to function but with more difficulty and/or not up to par.
?

You may wonder why some people fall into SADness or SASsiness as winter approaches while others do not. I?m going to oversimplify the explanation greatly by using an analogy. People who develop either malady are like solar-powered cars whose solar cells are not as efficient as the rest of the solar-powered cars around them. They need more time in the sun to obtain full power. During most of the year, they get enough sunlight to go the distances they need to go, but in the fall and winter (in the northern hemisphere), when the amount and intensity of daylight decreases, they don?t get a sufficient amount of sunlight to charge their batteries fully. Consequently, they may not have enough power to go the distances they need to go, may be more and more sluggish, slower to respond, harder to turn. The owners of these cars understandably may get frustrated, irritated and/or regret having them.
?

Unfortunately, trade-ins aren?t available for those suffering from SAD or SAS. However, you can improve your performance during the fall and winter months. When facing any problem, anyone typically has three major problem-solving strategies: (1) modify the environment so it suits you better; (2) modify yourself so you can function better in the existing environment; or (3) move to a different environment. Applying these three strategies to the problems of SAD/SAS leads to the following recommendations.
?

Modify the environment
?

You can modify your environment in a few different ways to alleviate SAD/SAS symptoms. You can arrange your home or office furnishings to take as much advantage of the sunlight (preferably morning sunlight) as possible to sit or stand more of the time such that direct sunlight falls on your face.
?

Alternatively, you can invest in a real phototherapy lamp to sit in front of you to shine on your face as you read, write, type or work for 20 minutes up to two hours a day. Real phototherapy lamps are designated as having at least 10,000 lux (a measure of light density). Full-spectrum light is not the answer; the density of the light is what matters. Good basic models can be found starting at about $200 to $300. More sophisticated models can be used as alarm clocks in that they can be located next to your bed and have an extension boom so that the light can shine on your face. Such lamps have dawn simulators set like alarm clocks to turn on dimly at first at a time of your choosing and then to get progressively brighter, thus simulating the rising of the sun. It provides an extra dose of light while you?re waking up.
?

Phototherapy lamps can be found online or at some local medical supply stores. Sunlamps, grow lights, natural/full-spectrum lights and suntanning beds are not the same as phototherapy lamps and do not alleviate SAD/SAS symptoms.
?

Modifying yourself
?

You can also make some adjustments in yourself to prevent or diminish the symptoms of SAD/SAS. You could choose to spend more time outside in the sunlight that does exist in the fall/winter. Use breaks/lunches to get to a place where the sun can fall directly on your face while you sit, walk or run.
?

If taking more advantage of the existing sunlight is either not possible or not sufficient, you could increase your exercise because exercise also can relieve depressive symptoms as effectively, though not as quickly, as antidepressant medication in some cases, according to the book Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John J. Ratey and Eric Hagerman. ?

Of course, exercising is difficult when you?re already experiencing SAD/SAS, which is why it is best used as a preventive measure. But if you?re already experiencing symptoms, exercising still may be a possibility if you can join some kind of group exercise experience such as a fitness class or a fall/winter team sport. If nothing else, arrange to exercise with someone else to whom you can be accountable. You could invest in home gym equipment or join a local YMCA or fitness club. Finally, many people simply walk in the mall when it is too dark, cold or wet outside.
?

Another way to adapt to the darker fall/winter environment is to get an evaluation for antidepressant medication. As with using allergy medication for seasonal allergies, some people cope with SAD by using antidepressant medication just during the fall/winter months. The newer antidepressants often have minimal, if any, side effects and are widely used by many people. Those already on an antidepressant may need an adjustment in dosage or a supplemental augmenting medication.
?

Move to a different environment
?

Northerners who spend winters in Florida are known as snowbirds because they migrate south for the winter. People with severe debilitating SAD and who don?t respond to any of the previous suggestions, may need to find a way to spend their falls and winters farther south or may need to move south permanently. SAD is more prevalent the farther north you go. For some, regular weekends at the beach may be sufficient.
?

Under medical supervision
?

Be sure to check with a qualified medical/psychiatric professional before employing any of these remedies. In some people, phototherapy and antidepressant medications can trigger hypomanic and manic symptoms. As with any serious physical treatment, medical supervision is required.
?

You can stop yourself from falling into SAD or SAS, but even if you have fallen into SAD or SAS, you can get up again.

Tips On Your Home Business - PDF

Tips On Your Home Business

You may not be able to quit your job tomorrow, but what if you had the chance to quit within a
year or two? A lot of people try to say that you can work from home. It is possible to work
from home, but you will have to dedicate yourself. This article will provide you with the basic
information you need to begin a business from your home.

Make sure that your home business has an objective or mission statement. Describe the
function of your company and basic agenda in a few simple sentences. If you create an
objective, you will have an answer ready when someone asks you to describe your business.
Not only will it reinforce your own convictions, it will build confidence in others regarding your
business.

To save money, keep track of all your business expenses. Include things, such as Internet
service and mileage, that are business related. The great thing about these business-related
expenses is that you can deduct some of them off your taxes. Small things can add up, so
make sure you ferret out all the deductions you can.

In order to make sure your business is financially set, you should always have emergency
funds available. This will help you take care of expenses that are unexpected and will keep
your company running smoothly. Stick to the purpose of having an emergency fund by only
using the money within it for true emergencies. If an emergency does arise, once you're back
on track begin to re-fill the emergency fund as quickly as you can.

Do a background and previous work history check on anyone you think of hiring for your
home business. Make sure that the people you are trusting are reliable, and can do the job
very well, or you could lose everything you have been working so hard for.

Be sure to keep your website up to date on which products are available and which, if any,
are out of stock. One way to upset your customers is to have them buy something and not let
them know that it will not arrive for several weeks. Let your customers know that a product is
back-ordered, and provide alternative choices to your customer as well.

Business trips can be helpful for you and your business. There are tax deductions you can
take from going on business trips. One way to take a relaxing vacation and still get the
business tax deduction is to pick a vacation spot where a seminar is being held. This allows
you to deduct the trip as a business expense.

Ensure that you set aside money for taxes! Your taxes are going to be roughly 20 percent of
profits, and if you set aside when it is earned, you will not have problems when it comes time
to pay.

Many people dream all their lives about starting a home business. Sadly, many of them do

not know how to start a home business and will not learn. Take it one step at a time, apply
the tips from this article, and soon you will find yourself the proud owner of a brand-new
home business.

No deal for Opel, unions on restructuring by deadline

HAMBURG (Reuters) - Loss-making General Motors unit Opel has not reached an agreement with its German workforce over a restructuring plan, including the planned closure of its Bochum plant, by the Friday deadline imposed by trade union IG Metall.

"Discussions will be held whether to continue negotiations and if so on what basis," a spokeswoman for IG Metall told Reuters on Friday.

Should the union's wage commission, which is expected to meet within the hour, come to the conclusion that the two sides are still too far apart, then it would be tantamount to declaring the talks have failed.

This would mean that come November 1, IG Metall would automatically expect Opel to hike wages by the 4.3 percent agreed across the industry, which has not been paid for months in agreement with the union, with full back pay.

Should it, however, choose to go ahead with further negotiations then it will have to decide whether to continue delaying the wage increase. The union's federal wage commission is the only body with the authority to make this decision.

"There will be a solution for this. If negotiations continue, then this issue will be clarified," the spokeswoman said.

This week's decision by GM rival Ford to close two vehicle assembly plants in Europe -- reducing capacity by 355,000 vehicles and about 13 percent of its European workforce -- adds additional pressure to unions to accept deep cuts that would include the closure of Bochum.

Connie Jo Williams emphasizes early education at Lunch Bunch ...

PASCAGOULA, Mississippi -- Dr. Connie Jo Williams told parents on Wednesday that 50 percent of children's cognitive skills have been developed by the time they reach four years old, and the number of beds put in prisons are determined by how well third graders score on standardized testing.

Williams, director of the Early Beginnings Program for the Pascagoula School District, spoke during the monthly Lunch Bunch sponsored by Parents for Public Schools. Parents and grandparents from Moss Point, Pascagoula and Ocean Springs school districts attended the monthly luncheon held at the Pascagoula Public Library.

Williams told the group that children have the ability to learn from the time they are in the womb, but that parents must teach them in appropriate ways for their age levels. She said she often hears parents cursing young children at school and in public places.

"Children are not talked to; children are not read to; children are not nurtured," she said. "Children are dog-cursed."

She said that it's important that children have basic academic skills and school behavior before entering kindergarten. Children without preschool education usually score low in critical areas on entrance testing.

"If they are not able to do it, they are going to score in the emerging group. That's a sentence for life," she said.

However, the most telling scores are those of third graders, she said.

"Third grade scores are the number one predictor of prison beds. That's a child given a prison sentence," Williams said.

She said Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana do not have public pre-K programs. And according to federal law, a child does not have to attend school until they reach 7 years old.

Williams, talked about the programs provided by the school district that target early childhood education, including the Teen Parent, Excel By 5, Pre-K Launch Pad, Imagination Library, Super Saturday, and Family Interactive Center, where children are provided learning activities and educational material.

The district works with daycare centers in Pascagoula and Gautier, and public agencies in Jackson County.

Myya Robinson, Gulf Coast parent coach for Parents for Public Schools, Debbie Anglin, communication director for Pascagoula School District, and Patrice McCullum with Moss Point's Excel by Five also provided information about available learning material and activities offered in school districts.

Parent Anne' McMillion said she is constantly looking for ways to provide learning materials for her two children and any other children. She was pleased with the discussion early childhood education.

"I think it was really encouraging and very informative. This gives us a way to start collaborating on areas we know for our younger children," said McMillion. "We've got to get back to the cradle and nurturing for our younger children because we are losing them."

The Moss Point mother said she homeschools her 12-year-old daughter and 6-year-old son, and would do more to work with Excel by 5.

Robinson said the Lunch Bunch has provided sessions on careers and sex education, the latter in Moss Point schools, who hosted the event. Scranton's provided refreshments for today's meeting.

Nancy Loome from the Parent Campaign will talk about charter schools at 6 p.m. Nov. 15 in the Family Interactive Center.

For more on Parents for Public Schools, check www.ppseverywhere.org or contact Robinson at 223-1983.

Playing too many video games before bed may be bad for you ...

Even the laptop is in sleep mode...

If there?s one thing that I don?t have a problem with, it?s falling asleep. I can grab some shuteye pretty much anywhere, on anything. Which would explain why I woke up in a bathtub full of ice, a scar in my side and was a few organs short, the last time that I crashed at Geoff?s place. According to science, all those late night sessions that he spent playing video games have been bad for him, as researchers now claim thattoo many games before beddy bye-times is a bad thing.

The Medical Xpress has reported that a study conducted on teenage boys who played violent video games for between 1-3 hours before sleep, over two nights, showed a decrease of 27 minutes in nap time, and a 39 minute delay in sleep onset.

?While they went to bed at their regular bedtime, the adolescents? still experienced significant sleep disruptions caused by frequent awakenings throughout the night,? said Flinders University child sleep psychologist Dr. Michael Gradisar, who supervised the study.

Gradisar also noted that the dreaming section of sleep, the Losing my religion component REM, also experienced a 12 minute reduction. ?This may not seem like a significant reduction but REM plays an important part in helping us remember content we learnt that day so for adolescents in their final years of school who are revising for exams, winding down at night with a video game might not be the best idea?, Gradisar said.

However, according to the research, the teens who played for only under an hour, experienced no issues whatsoever, and fell asleep within standard times.?But their sleep onset delay almost doubled to 39 minutes when they played for two and a half hours so clearly there?s a limit to how much you should play before bed,? said Gradisar.

This is all based on games with a gory and bloody tone to them though, and did not take into account more child-friendly titles. ?The aim of this investigation wasn?t to assess the content of video games but to look at the effect of the worst possible thing to do before bed because at the end of the day we want to better understand what affects adolescents? sleep,? Gradisar explained.

?At the moment, less than one hour seems okay.?

Well, that explains Geoff at least. For the rest of us though, I?m certain that plenty of us have already fallen asleep in a couch playing Mortal Kombat, Mario Kart or anything in-between. I?ll pinch the salt heavily on this research, methinks.

PFT: Quinn to replace Cassel as Chiefs QB

Cam Newton, Warren MoonAP

Few have worked as closely with Cam Newton as Warren Moon, and the Hall of Fame quarterback is still defending last year?s pupil, even while acknowledging his need to improve.

Moon thinks placing too much of the blame for the Panthers? 1-5 start (and the firing of general manager Marty Hurney) at the second-year quarterback?s feet is wrong, and any suggestion he?s a bust is ridiculous.

?I think a lot of this is because so many people want to say ?I told you so? about him, but couldn?t because he was so good last year,? Moon told Yahoo?s Mike Silver in a wide-ranging interview. ?I think people are overreacting. How can he be a bust? He just had one of the great years a rookie has ever had, and now he can?t play? Come on.?

Moon acknowledged he?d like to see Newton adopt a more even-keeled approach, something he?s done more of in recent weeks. But as he did prior to the draft?last year, Moon thinks there?s an undertone of racism to some of the criticism.

?I don?t understand it,? Moon said. ?I heard somebody compare him to Vince Young. It?s the same old crap ? it?s always a comparison of one black to another black. I get tired of it. I get tired of defending it.

?If you want to compare him to someone because of his demeanor, compare him to Jay Cutler. There are a lot of guys who whine and moan. Cam?s not biting anybody?s head off or pushing his linemen. He?s just disgruntled, and not handling losing well, because, think about it, he basically didn?t lose in college.

?I don?t think Cam?s as bad as Cutler, because Cutler looks like he doesn?t give a damn sometimes, or he?s yelling and cussing at someone. Cam, he just looks down when they?re losing.?

Moon also doesn?t think the Panthers coaches are putting Newton in good positions to succeed by ignoring the run game with the talent they have, and leaning too heavily on the read-option principles he ran in college.

?I don?t know why they got away from what they were doing last year,? Moon said. ?They were running more of a pro-style offense, and now they?re going more to the read-option, the stuff he did in college. I think some of it is coaching. I think some of it is they don?t have enough good players yet. And there?s no question he?s not playing as well as last year.

?That offense doesn?t allow you to be an NFL-type quarterback. It?s a lot of tricks, sticking the ball into a running back?s stomach, trying to freeze the defense. Even though he can do that and had success with it in college, I don?t think it serves him well in the long run. You can?t keep going back and forth. I think he?s a little bit confused with the footwork, and I think that?s one of the problems with his accuracy ? his feet are crossed up. Why this change? I think it?s backfiring. I think they?re out-thinking themselves.?

Sounds familiar.

Rev. Jackson: Congressman son at Mayo for eval

(AP) ? The Rev. Jesse Jackson says his congressman son has checked back into the Mayo Clinic for an evaluation.

The elder Jackson told The Associated Press that Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. was back at the Minnesota facility Tuesday. He was released from there last month following treatment for bipolar disorder and gastrointestinal issues.

A Mayo spokesman and Jackson's office didn't immediately have an update.

The congressman's father says the evaluation may lead to a longer stay. Congressional colleagues who visited the younger Jackson Monday say he was preparing for a longer visit.

Jackson took medical leave in June. His staff has released few details about his condition and hasn't said when he'll return to work.

Jackson is on the Nov. 6 ballot although he hasn't campaigned beyond a robocall to voters.
