George?s Street Arcade (South City Markets) ? Fade Street
Financial Marketing
George?s Street Arcade (South City Markets) is located on South Great George?s Street. It is a beautiful Victorian style red-bricked indoor market with many stalls and stores. It opened in 1881 as the South City Markets and was Dublin?s first purpose built Victorian Shopping Centre.

The City Market Company was incorporated in Dublin with a share capital of ?200,000 and a loan capital of ?50,000, for the establishment, maintenance and regulation of a market on the south side of the city in 1876. In order for the company to require the land necessary to develop the markets an act of parliament was needed and acquired, this gave the company not only the power to acquire the lands but also the responsibility to widen and generally improve the surrounding streets. Noted British architects Lockwood & Mauson won the contract to design and build the market complex. In 1881 South City Markets was officially opened by the Lord Mayor Sir George Moyers after the development was heavily promoted by wealthy families with substantial property interests in the area. The opening was a grand occasion and was well attended by the invited guests who were entertained to luncheon by the market chairman Joseph Tod Hunter Pim. There were no native Dubliners on the guest list and this went down very badly with the locals and was not forgotten.

Initially the market was not popular with ordinary Dubliners, mainly because of the appointment of English architects and builders. Sadly, tragedy was to befall South City Market on August 27th 1892 when the massive city fire of that date devastated the whole building. Miraculously no one was killed but the shopkeepers lost their premises and overhead homes, and the stallholders suffered even greater financial loss through their stock not having been insured. Some of the letters from the Stallholders to Management detailing the extent of their stock loss remain to this day. There was a flood of public sympathy for them and a fund for their relief was successfully organised. The Centre was re-built in the same style, using local labour and craftsmen, and was re-opened on September 13th 1894 and on this occasion all local dignitaries of any standing whatsoever were invited.

The property was acquired in 1992 by the current owners, the Layden Family Group from City Properties. Through good tenant mix and management and the low key sympathetic refurbishment of the buildings, the Arcade is once again doing well. There are approximately fifty tenants varying in size from Dunnes Stores to small stalls, selling everything from high fashion and accessories to trendy funky gear, from custom designed solid silver to costume jewellery, from hair-styling to fortune telling, and catering for lovers of music, art, books, speciality ornaments, memorabilia, stamps and coin collections, caf?s, general groceries and speciality foods.

(AP) ? Andy Reid was in deep negotiations with the Kansas City Chiefs to become their next coach, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The two sides were working out the details and Reid had canceled plans to interview for other openings, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the negotiations.

The Philadelphia Eagles fired Reid on Monday, the same day the Chiefs parted ways with coach Romeo Crennel.

The Chiefs have a connection with Reid through team president Mark Donovan, who spent six years as the Eagles' senior vice president of business operations before joining Kansas City. Several members of the Chiefs met with Reid, who has also been linked to openings in Arizona and San Diego, for close to nine hours on Wednesday.

Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt began his search for Crennel's replacement in Atlanta, where he interviewed offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter on Tuesday. One day later, Falcons coach Mike Smith said that Koetter had signed a new contract and would not be pursuing a head coaching job.

Hunt told the AP this week that he would lead the search for the Chiefs' next coach, not embattled general manager Scott Pioli. Hunt said he had "the appropriate resources available to help me in the process," but would not say who is assisting him. It's unclear whether Pioli would be retained if Reid becomes the Chiefs' coach.

Hunt's decision to spearhead the coaching search coincides with his decision to take greater control of football operations. Pioli had been responsible for all personnel moves since he was hired in 2009, including the hiring and firing of the head coach.

The opening in Kansas City is attractive on several levels: The Chiefs had five Pro Bowl players despite their 2-14 record, they have the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft for the first time in franchise history, and it appears that Hunt is willing to give his next coach more authority to make personnel decisions than in years past.

The Eagles were just 12-20 the past two seasons, but Reid's overall record of 130-93-1 represents the most wins in franchise history. He also has experience turning around a program ? the Eagles were just 3-13 the year before he arrived, and two years later they finished 11-5 and second in the NFC East.

That was the first of five straight years in which the Eagles won at least 11 games, and included a trip to the Super Bowl after the 2004 season.

Facebook adds voice recording to Messenger, testing VoIP service in Canada

Facebook adds voice recording to Messenger, testing VoIP service in Canada

If you're a fan of the Facebook Messenger app keep your eye out for an interesting update coming down the pipe today for both the iOS and Android versions. The social network is adding the ability to record and send voice messages, up to one minute in length, to your friends. The goal isn't to create a voice mail system for Facebook, but to give users another option for interacting when typing is either impossible or inconvenient. It works much like the video feature in the company's Poke app -- press and hold the red record button, speak your message and it'll appear in-line as part of your chat, represented by a clickable sound wave icon. Even more interesting though, is the VoIP capabilities that are being flipped on for Canadian users. It's a little buried at the moment -- hidden behind the "i" icon in the chat window -- but everyone's favorite social network is now offering a way to place free voice calls to friends. Interestingly, the platform is built on open source technology and not on its Skype partnership. If things go well in the land of maple trees and Mounties we imagine it wont be too long before America gets a taste of VoIP calling Facebook style.

The Down Side of Self Improvement

party horn v2It?s that time of year. Just when you think it?s safe to re-enter your life, pack up your holiday decorations, and get back to a sense of normalcy, the New Year?s resolution messages creep in.

Lose weight?get healthy?build your business?fix your relationships?build wealth?make 2013 the BEST YEAR EVER?

I must admit I am a recovering self-help junkie. The lure is intoxicating isn?t it? If only this program, this product, this time will make me happy? It?s seductive. It?s inspiring. It?s marketing. And it may also be what?s keeping you stuck just where you are.

Think about the term self improvement. It implies there?s something wrong, something that needs fixing. If we live our lives based on that belief, then we ride the endless cycle of feeling broken and looking for repair. And most of the time looking for answers (aka things) outside ourselves: books, classes, pills, equipment, gadgets, relationships, etc.

I?m a strong believer that our feelings are a product of our choices, thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs. That things outside of us can?t make us feel, but rather our reaction to those things creates our experiences.

But it?s a fine line between wanting to change and feeling horrible about who we are. And this is the season for people to capitalize on that subtle distinction.

I think there are many products and services out there that can be helpful to us in our journey to change. The trick is picking ones that help rather than hurt us in the process. If messages come at you with a ?this is what?s wrong with you? tone, I?d say avoid them altogether. Look for messages that expand on something you?re already doing or wanting that support you and focus on the positive.

What would YOU like to change in 2013? Here?s some things to try as you look ahead to the year and life you want to create:

  1. Make a list of what you accomplished in 2012. So many times it?s easy to focus on what we DIDN?T do. But be sure to take some time honoring the things you DID do.
  2. List all the things you are grateful for. Make this a regular practice.
  3. Spend some time alone in silence or listening to music that is calming. Think of what you want to create for the upcoming year in the areas of health and well being, relationships, career, finance, etc. Then write down one realistic, obtainable goal for each category that you can accomplish within a month.

Remember, wanting to make positive changes and improvements in your life is normal and healthy if it comes from a place of strength. Focus on the positive that?s already in your life and what you want to create and you?ll be off to a great start in making this a wonderful year.

Christmas Leftovers ? debt management

Print This Article?Print This Article

Christmas is the time of good cheer but when the guests have all gone and the wrapping paper and dishes have been cleared away, there are the leftovers to contend with.

Unfortunately, for many families, the most problematic leftovers are debts. Just like turkey and trifle, left over debt needs to be packaged up, cooled off and dealt with as soon as possible.

Start with a quick assessment of your financial situation; how much cash you have on hand, and how much you owe. List your debts in order, ranked according to the interest rate you are paying and noting the amount owed and the minimum monthly payment.

Now look at whether you can refinance any of your debts at a lower interest rate. There are many different rates available from banks and other lending institutions.

Here are some options:

  • You may be able to increase your mortgage to repay credit card or hire purchase debt
  • Assets other than your house such as a car or an insurance policy can be used as security for a loan, so you can borrow at a lower interest rate.
  • Shop around for a low interest credit card
  • Contact a finance company that offers debt consolidation to see if you can reduce your interest cost

With all of these options you will need to be aware of any penalties, additional administration or insurance costs that may be incurred.

Once you have shopped around for the best interest rate, plough all your spare cash into reducing the debt at the top of your list by increasing your regular payments, making lump sum payments, or both.

Your goal should be to have no debt other than a mortgage and to then repay your mortgage as quickly as possible while still enjoying life.

Judge halts contraceptive mandate for Mich. firm

(AP) ? A federal judge has ruled a property management company owned by the founder of Domino's Pizza doesn't have to immediately implement mandatory contraception coverage in the health care law.

U.S. District Judge Lawrence Zatkoff ruled Sunday in favor of Tom Monaghan and his Domino's Farms Corp., near Ann Arbor. Monaghan, a devout Roman Catholic, says contraception isn't health care but a "gravely immoral" practice.

Zatkoff granted Monaghan's emergency motion for a temporary restraining order until a final decision is made in the case. The mandate would have taken effect Tuesday.

The government says the contraception mandate benefits women's health and removes financial barriers. There are about a dozen similar lawsuits pending nationwide.

Monaghan sold most of his controlling stake in Domino's Pizza in 1998 to private equity company Bain Capital.
