The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for many counties in the Midlands until 1 a.m.
Areas affected in the watch zone include, Richland County, Lexington County, Lee County, Newberry County, Orangeburg County, Saluda County, and Sumter County.
Severe storms impacting the Upstate of South Carolina will likely bring damaging winds and heavy rain to the Midlands later this evening.
A tornado warning was issued for three Upstate counties just before 4 p.m. The National Weather Service detected a storm capable of producing a tornado 10 miles northeast of Walhalla moving northeast at 60 mph. No tornado touchdowns have been reported.
A tornado watch in effect until 8 p.m. for all Upstate counties.
Highs in the Midlands reached record levels in advance of a strong line of thunderstorms that will move through the area.
According to WIS Chief Meteorologist John Farley, the storms will push through the Midlands later this evening. The worst of the weather is expected to arrive in the western Midlands around 8:00 p.m., in Columbia around 9:00 p.m., and into the eastern Midlands around 10:00 p.m.
The biggest threat will be very strong, potentially damaging winds as some of the thunderstorms could turn severe.? The ingredients are not there for any large tornado outbreak. But as with all thunderstorms, there is a slight risk of a tornado.
You are urged to stay off the roads for the hour or so that the storms affect the area.
Rain totals could reach up to one inch in the western and northern counties of the Midlands.
The sky will clear out quickly after midnight as the front lifts to the east. High temperatures will? drop to the 50s with lows in the 30s for the rest of the week.
