Belgium Says 'No' To Scientology, Country To Prosecute Church As 'Criminal Organization'

By Radar Staff

2012 has been a very bad year for Scientology with the latest blow being a decision by officials in Belgium to prosecute it as a "criminal organization."

After years of investigation by authorities, federal prosecutors will start legal proceedings against Scientology, which isn't recognized as a religion in Belgium.

Scientology and several of its members face charges of extortion, fraud, illegal practice of medicine, and violations of privacy legislation in the European country.

EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: Tom Cruise's Tricked Out SUV Made By Scientology Church Members

According to De Standaard, raids on Scientology offices in Belgium allegedly revealed evidence that the group had spied on and extorted money from converts. And an Associated Press report said that investigators have spent more than a decade trying to determine how far Scientology went in recruiting members after many complaints were filed with police by former Scientologists claiming they'd been the victims of intimidation and extortion.

Only about 500 people belong to Scientology in Belgium.

Other European countries haven't been any more welcoming to the controversial church.? Germany refuses to recognize Scientology as a faith, and in 2009, a French court convicted the church and six of its members of organized fraud.

The situation in Belgium follows hot on the heels of other Scientology low points in 2012.

As RadarOnline.com has previously reported, an investigation ensued after three young patients died in Oklahoma at a Narconon rehab center, which uses controversial Scientology methods to get people clean and sober.

And the church's best known celebrity member, Tom Cruise was dumped by his wife Katie Holmes, who blindsided him with a divorce filing in June.

Husband of slain Wis. cop arrested in her death

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? The husband of a police officer who was fatally shot on Christmas Eve while patrolling in suburban Milwaukee has been arrested in connection with her death, authorities said Thursday.

Benjamin Sebena, of Menomonee Falls, was booked into Milwaukee County Jail on Wednesday night on a tentative charge of first-degree intentional homicide, the Wauwatosa police department said in a statement.

He has not been formally charged in the death of his 30-year-old wife, Jennifer Sebena. A message was left with the district attorney's office seeking comment.

Ben Sebena, 30, is a decorated U.S. Marine who served two tours in Iraq before suffering severe arm and leg injuries in a mortar attack, according to Pastor Scott Arbeiter at Elmbrook Church in nearby Brookfield.

Police officers found Sebena's body in the early hours of Monday morning after she failed to respond to radio calls. She had been shot several times. Police have released few details about the shooting.

Jennifer Sebena had worked for the Wauwatosa police department for two years and her death was the first in active duty in the department's 96-year history. Wauwatosa is a city of about 46,000 people just west of Milwaukee.

Sebena's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Simple Home Improvement Suggestions That Can Improve ...

When you decide to do a home improvement project, it is important to do ones that promote safety at your residence. For example, every year there are fires in homes and other buildings caused by faulty electrical devices.

Many people like to start with their basement. If they do this, the electrical receptacles should always be placed higher. Placing the outlets higher up on the walls is done in the event your basement may ever flood.

This type of flooding will not occur if you live in a location where there is little to no rain. More than likely, your basement will be safe. You may want to place them a foot off the ground, but not 6 feet or anything that looks absolutely ludicrous. If all else fails, contact an electrician that can help you with this problem and pay them to install your outlets if necessary. Your property could also pose a problem with water if it does not adequately drain the rainfall that you get each year. It is essential that the slope leading away from your house drains the water satisfactorily. If you have the time and money, you might want to put in an additional underground drainage system. By simply digging a trench and putting in PVC tubing, with holes predrilled, and piling rocks on the top, your problem will be solved. The tubing you attach will lead away from your house. You can do this drainage system very quickly and it will work effectively for years.

Kitchen cabinets come in all different types and price ranges, but the cost of new cabinets can get quite high. One solution that might be quite a bit less money, is to take wood veneer and resurface the cabinets that are already there. With all the available wood veneers that are beautiful, it certainly is worth investigating. Veneers might not be a cheap option, because you might like exotic wood as your solution. Depending on where you live, the cost of getting the work done by a craftsman could be high. Think about getting up every day and going into your new kitchen that looks so different.

Having new appliances in your kitchen is a great thing to have, especially if you have the money! Use a licensed electrician to put them in. People without an electrician?s license should not be working on your home so be aware of that. A licensed electrician will be able to wire your new appliances using the current loading protection that needs to be in place. You may have to replace everything from your outlets to the actual wiring to get this done right. Plus, the ultimate reason for doing this has to do with safety. Your electrical system in your home should be safe, something you always want to be concerned about. You will find that simple upkeep and maintenance definitely qualifies for the home improvement category. People that have owned their homes, and lived in them, for many decades, will certainly know what needs to be fixed. The best thing you can do is make a list of what needs to be done to repair your home. Those that are computer savvy should use their laptop or PC to make a list of these home improvement suggestions.

Interior design is a superb approach to produce new spirit to a old looking space as well as house. For this area of support, get a good interior designer and have a discussion concerning how to boost your residing or maybe working surrounding.

(AP) ? Looks like Shamu may soon be making a splash in the stock market.

The company behind the water shows featuring killer whales, dolphins and other animals at SeaWorld on Thursday said it was planning to go public.

SeaWorld Entertainment Inc. filed for an initial public offering of stock with an initial goal of raising $100 million. That number is likely to change as the company's bankers gauge interest from investors.

SeaWorld's owner, Blackstone Group LP, will likely sell some of its stake in the deal. But the private equity firm will still own a majority of the voting power of the company's shares after the IPO, the company said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

SeaWorld plans to use money from the IPO to pay debt and make a payment to Blackstone.

Blackstone bought SeaWorld from beer brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2009 in a deal worth at least $2.3 billion.

The Orlando, Fla., company did not list a date for the offering. The company also did not say how many shares would be sold, or for how much. SeaWorld plans to use the "SEAS" symbol for its stock, but did not say on which exchange it plans to trade.

Besides the three SeaWorld parks, the company's eight other properties include two Busch Gardens parks and Sesame Place, which is based on the children's TV show Sesame Street.SeaWorld said about 24 million people went to its parks in the 12 months through Sept. 30.

In the first nine months of this year, it earned $86.2 million, up 73 percent from $50 million in the same months a year ago. Revenue rose 7.6 percent to $1.16 billion.

Roccat Kone XTD

Although the Roccat Kone XTD ($89.99) is an update of the Roccat Kone[+] Gaming Mouse, the differences between the two are so few and incremental that they can be fraternal twins. With the exception of its more precise 8,200dpi laser sensor and a scroll wheel that can tilt from side to side, the Kone XTD shares an identical feature set with the Roccat Kone[+], and the end result is once again a comfortable, highly customizable gaming mouse loaded with functionality. If you've already got the Kone[+], you should stick with that. But if you're choosing between the two, the Kone XTD is well worth the extra $10.

Design and Features
Measuring 1.6 by 3 by 5.3 inches (HWD), the Kone XTD is a dead ringer for the Roccat Kone[+], as its chassis features molded contours that cradle your thumb and pinky. Coupled with the fact that the Kone XTD's profile isn't low like that of the Razer Taipan, which makes for a very comfortable mouse. Moreover, the Kone XTD's frame is covered with a soft-touch matte finish, which provides a good grip while also preventing smudges and splotches a lot more effectively than, say, the glossy surface seen on the Razer Naga Hex. The Kone XTD's frame weighs 4.3 ounces, and it can be adjusted by inserting one to four of the included five-gram weights in a compartment on its underside.

The top of the Kone XTD features four LEDs housed in two strips that can either cycle through various colors or subtly pulsate with the color of your choosing. Additionally, different color selections can be assigned among the five game profiles that can be stored on the Kone XTD's on-board memory.

In between the standard left- and right- click buttons is the Kone XTD's clickable scroll wheel. While I personally prefer the Corsair Vengeance M60's beefier metallic tracking wheel, the Kone XTD wins when it comes to functionality because it can be tilted to the left and right, which adds the equivalent of two additional buttons to the mix. The scroll wheel is flanked by a button that opens up the Start menu above it and a pair of DPI adjusters beneath it for changing sensitivity on the fly. The upper crest of the thumb cradle, meanwhile features a page forward button and the marquee Easy-Shift [+] button. Holding the latter button while clicking another ?as you would with a shift key - yields an entirely different function to that button. Consequently, users can assign two functions to each button, effectively doubling the number of available functions from 12 to 23 while avoiding the need to cram a smorgasbord of buttons on the surface.

The Kone XTD is a wired mouse that connects via a tangle-resistant braided USB 2.0 cable. There isn't a wireless option, so users who prefer the freedom offered by Bluetooth or a 2.4GHz wireless receiver will have to look elsewhere. That said, wired mice provide a higher level of precision that their wireless counterparts simply can't match, and since precision makes all the difference between winning and losing on the gaming grid, it's an understandable omission.

Lefties, beware: The Kone XTD's frame is designed to be held by right-handed folks, so if you game with a southpaw you'd be better off with an ambidextrously designed mouse, like the Razer Taipan.

Performance
Armed with R3 laser sensor with a maximum DPI of 8,200, the Kone XTD can be tuned to a hyper-sensitive extreme more than most mice, including the Roccat Kone[+] (6,000dpi) and the Vengeance M60 (5,700dpi). As expected, its response rate is incredibly fast?our testing confirmed its advertised polling rate of 1000Hz.

In addition to its precision, the Kone XTD is highly customizable. Once you download the driver from Roccat's site, you'll be met with an avalanche of options that touch on nearly every aspect of the Kone XTD, like selecting LED lighting patterns, assigning functions and macros to each button (and its Easyshift alter-ego), and adjusting dpi sensitivity. Additionally, the software lets you create user profiles, five of which can be stored on the Kone XTD's on-board memory. All said, calling the Kone XTD merely customizable almost seems like an understatement.

One of the reasons we like reviewing gaming mice here at the Labs is that it lets us play games under the guise of testing, and I accordingly headed into a few rounds of Team Fortress 2 armed with the Kone XTD in my holster. The gaming mouse made for a formidable weapon on the gaming grid, where its laser sensor yielded smooth movement on high DPI settings without exhibiting any lag. Moreover, it felt comfortable in my hand throughout, and the Easyshift button's close proximity to my thumb kept it accessible and easy to press.

Ultimately, the Roccat Kone XTD benefits enormously from sharing most of its DNA with the Roccat Kone[+]. By adding a few incremental improvements to an already well-designed, highly customizable gaming mouse, its fate as great choice was sealed from the start. That said, if you've already got the Kone[+], you'll be fine sticking with that. However, if you're starting from a blank slate, the Kone XTD is a great choice.

'Mr. Cao Goes to Washington' Film Recounts an American Dream

One of the key parts of the immigrant experience is the journey itself. For two Asian-American filmmakers, moving to the United States provided them both opportunity - but under very different circumstances. Mingh Nguyen, a 40-year old filmmaker based in Los Angeles, arrived in the US from Vietnam in 1982 when he was nine years old. His travels began a year earlier as one of the Vietnamese boat people. Nguyen?s parents lost their business and home after the fall of Saigon. The decision was made to flee and done in secret. ?Somebody would get a boat, and would calculate how many people would be on it, and at night you kind of sneak out and get on that boat,? Nguyen said. ?You get out to sea and you try to reach one of the refugee camps in Thailand, the Philippines or Malaysia. We actually got to Thailand.?

It took Nguyen five attempts before finally getting away. ?We tried to go all as a family and then we got caught,? he said. ?My dad was in jail for eight nine months. The women and kids, like me, were in the jail for about two weeks before we were let out.?

Nguyen remembers living conditions in the refugee camp were crowded, and families split up. Men worked in the field while the women and children performed other jobs. ?My mom was doing cooking duties and things like that. We all had to sleep together in this really huge barracks like a warehouse - like hundreds of people,? Nguyen explained.

After spending a year in a refugee camp off the coast of Thailand, Nguyen received sponsorship from a Catholic group in the United States. He was later flown to San Francisco and settled in San Jose, California.?Transition to a new American way of life was difficult. Nguyen started fourth grade and was scared.??I went to school and I didn?t speak or write English very well. So for the first few months the teacher just put me in a corner until I was able to get caught up with English and was able to join the other students,? Nguyen said.? He admitted being frightened, but said watching television helped him learn English.

Nguyen went to the University of California-Berkeley where he received a degree in molecular biology degree, and followed that with a job at the U-S Department of Agriculture. But Nguyen said he was bored.?He recalls writing short stories at night and later taking creative writing courses.? ?I remember I was enjoying watching movies and going to see plays, so I tried writing fiction and that really opened the world for me,? Nguyen said. Several of his short stories were published in literary journals.

He attended film school and ultimately switched careers. His feature-length directorial debut is the movie ?Touch? - a romantic-drama about an unlikely friendship between a shy Vietnamese-American manicurist and an auto mechanic who is trying to keep his crumbling marriage alive. The film has won a number of awards on the independent film circuit. Looking back on his life and professional path, Nguyen advised: ?With hard work you can follow your dream.?

A CHINESE AMERICAN JOURNEY

For Chinese-American filmmaker Leo Chiang, coming to America was also a parental decision. The 42-year-old San Francisco-based director was 15 when he left Taiwan.??My parents had decided to send me and my two siblings to the U.S. to get educated, basically.? I think that for the rest of the world at that time, American universities were seen as the best,? Chiang said.

Chiang traveled to San Jose, California where family members were there to help him.? Chiang admitted it was not always easy to adjust to his new environment.??Initially it was difficult to blend in.? Not speaking the language very well and not knowing the culture very well was a bit difficult,? Chiang said. ?I definitely had to go through the English as a second language classes.?

Chiang succeeded and received a degree in electrical engineering at the University of California.? It led to a job with Apple Computers. But like Nyguen, he had his doubts.??I just really couldn?t see myself doing that for a long time. And I was always interested in film, I was a cinephile,?? Chiang said.? He applied to the University of Southern California?s graduate program in film production ?as a fluke? and was admitted.?Chiang quit his job with Apple and became a documentary filmmaker.

The career change was preceded by risks and foresight - initiated, he said, by his life as an immigrant.? ?I think it would be foolish of people to kind of dive in and come over here without preparation,? Chaing said.??I think that for folks who are interested in coming to the U.S., they really need to find out about American culture and about the places they plan to move to, what it's like, what the surrounding is like, what the environment is like,? Chiang said.

The award-winning filmmaker?s current documentary, ?Mr. Cao Goes to Washington? is the true story about the first Vietnamese-American elected to the US Congress.? Critics call the film a fascinating character study of New Orleans Congressman Joseph Cao.?"Mr Cao Goes to Washington" will air in January on PBS, the non-profit American public broadcasting service.

How Christmas morning looks from space

NOAA / NASA

This visualization shows a hemisphere's worth of weather on Christmas morning as seen by the GOES East satellite. The weather data is overlaid on a "Blue Planet" image of the Americas.

By Alan Boyle

All calendars must end, whether we're talking about the Maya calendar's nearly 400-year baktun cycle?? or our 25-day Cosmic Log Space Advent Calendar. This final image for the 2012 calendar comes from the GOES East weather satellite, and shows how the weather is shaping up this Christmas morning in the Americas.

The GOES satellites, East and West, are in geostationary orbits 22,300 miles above Earth. That allows them to monitor a whole hemisphere's weather 24/7 from a fixed position above the the planet. (GOES stands for Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite.) NASA takes the GOES satellites' readings on cloud cover and overlays them on a full-disk "Blue Planet" view of the oceans and land masses. The result is a hemisphere-wide snapshot of Earth like this one, produced every three hours.

Although this picture marks the end of our Advent calendar, you can keep the satellite images coming throughout the next year with?GeoEye's free desktop calendar. The calendar consists of a series of computer desktop wallpaper images, highlighting GeoEye satellite views from the past 13 years. DigitalGlobe also offers?2013 calendar packages?with an Earth-from-space theme, for purchase through the company's online store.

Seeing our planet from space tends to broaden a person's perspective on Earth's problems and preciousness: That's what Apollo 17's astronauts discovered 40 years ago this month when they snapped the first and most famous "Blue Planet" picture. Here's hoping that the past month's pictures of Earth as seen from outer space have broadened your perspective as well. Have you seen 'em all? If not, graze through the links below.

Yemen court sentences 3 militants to up to 6 years

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemen's state security court has sentenced three al-Qaida militants to up to six years in prison for planning attacks on security forces, foreign diplomatic missions and state institutions.

The court on Saturday gave the three militants between two and six years each. They have the right to appeal.

The judge also accused the three of running a training camp for al-Qaida in the southern Abyan province in 2011. He didn't provide further details on the alleged targets.

The court released four others who had already spent about 18 months in detention. The militants earlier denied the charges.

Yemeni President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi has ordered trials for dozens of al-Qaida suspects held without charges for over a year.

Washington considers al-Qaida's Yemen branch as the militant group's most dangerous.

RolePlayGateway?

An old homeless man cowers in the corner of a deserted alleyway. The ground beneath him soaked by his own waste, he screams, pleading under the tall shadow that slowly consumes him. The gaunt man that hovers over the pitiful soul is dressed entirely in black, the sole light of his being consists of his dull blue eyes, and the silver crucifix chain that he holds in his left hand.

?Who are you, why are you doing this?!? The old man cries. The enigmatic man sighs, and grudgingly opens his mouth to reveal a voice devoid of any sort of emotion.

?I am the alpha and the omega. The beginning and yet, the end. The creator and the extinguisher. I am a Reaper, and your time has come.?

The chain the man holds suddenly starts to illuminate with a warm, white light. The old homeless man screams and trembles at first, but then, as the light grows to cover him, he settles. He feels his body completely at ease, a euphoric feeling. It is at that moment that a massive porcelain door appears. The old man hesitates at first, intimidated by the sheer size of this incredible phenomenon. A force beckons him though, and he knows that he must go. Still shaking, the dirt covered old man faces the Reaper. They share a nod, and he begins to walk towards the doorway.

?Farewell.?

As the doors open the Reaper turns his back. The last thing he hears before he exists the alley is the sound of the door slamming shut.

?Another job well done.?

It is the first bit of emotion one would hear from the man as he stuffs the silver chain back into the pocket of his suit jacket and steps onto the city streets, disappearing among a dense crowd.

What's up guys? Thanks for dropping by. Let me tell you about a little idea of mine.

The Death & The Apple is an open world style, supernatural roleplay based in Babylon city. Babylon is a paralel version of New York, it's a city that's been the home base of the Reaper order for many, many years. This city is where the bulk of the roleplay will take place, it's a huge city, filled with plenty of hidden nooks and crannies for our characters to explore.

What are Reapers?

Reapers are guardians of humanity. Extraordinary humans gifted with supernatural abilities. Theirs is an ancient order, created back in biblical days during the Great War; a seven year battle between angels and demons. At the climax of the Great War, it was the Reapers that brought the two sides to a truce. The truce holds true today through a shaky peace between Heaven and Hell. The main goal of the order is to keep mankind free from the entanglements of the supernatural world no matter what.

A Reaper's day to day duties normally consist of hunting down those whose time has come. Using their silver crucifix pendants they 'send' people to the afterlife, weather it be Heaven or Hell. It's imperative for a Reaper to send a soul, why? Because, should a soul not be properly sent it becomes Lost. Lost Souls go one of two ways. The first is that they are doomed to linger in limbo: a plane between life and death. Souls in limbo are the ghosts we see. The second route for a Lost soul to go is much more horrible. The Lost Soul gets warped through the intense negative emotions it holds, becoming something similar to a demon. Reapers must combat these abominations and stop them before they harm the living.

Upon entering the order, a Reaper is paired with a senior member and they are immediately trained to unlock their Psyche. Psyches are the true power of Reapers. A single ability that grows and evolves with the user. No two Psyches are alike.

The Reaper order is lead by none other than The Grim Reaper. He is a man chosen by the leader of the angels. The current Grim Reaper is a man named Alan Darkmare, and fate should have it that he is also the mayor of Babylon. The thing is though, The Grim Reaper is dying. Bedridden for the past six months, the supernatural world is reeling, and many fear that it may be time for a new Grim Reaper to be chosen.

What's Going On Here?

The roleplay opens up during an unstable time in Babylon and the supernatural world. The Grim Reaper is on his death bed, more and more Lost are appearing in the Living Plane, and tensions between the forces of Heaven and Hell are at an all time high. Your character gets swept up in all of this. You are a human, whether you're a member of the Reapers or not doesn't matter, one way or another, you get swept up in all of this.

I'm not allowing members to play angels or demons because I want to keep them seen as these otherworldly figures. They're beyond or means and something we can't fully understand. As the story goes on there will be several angel and demon NPCs that I might allow some people to double up as, but never as a main character.

So that's the skinny on this thing. The roleplay is almost finished and should actually be up by Christmas. Let me know what you guys think about this one.

Video: Is America ready to get serious about curbing gun violence?

Angst over video games rises in wake of shootings

As police struggle to piece together the nightmare that unfolded in Newtown, Conn., last week, some lawmakers and pundits believe they've found a possible co-conspirator in the crime: video games. Nevertheless, it remains unclear which games the 20-year-old shooter played ? and what role they played in his life.

Removing protein 'garbage' in nerve cells may help control 2 neurodegenerative diseases

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Neuroscientists at Georgetown University Medical Center say they have new evidence that challenges scientific dogma involving two fatal neurodegenerative diseases -- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) -- and, in the process, have uncovered a possible therapeutic target as a novel strategy to treat both disorders.

The study, posted online today in the Journal of Biological Chemistry, found that the issue in both diseases is the inability of the cell's protein garbage disposal system to "pull out" and destroy TDP-43, a powerful, sometimes mutated gene that produces excess amounts of protein inside the nucleus of a nerve cell, or neuron.

"This finding suggests that if we're able to 'rev up' that clearance machinery and help the cell get rid of the bad actors, it could possibly reduce or slow the development of ALS and FTD," says the study's lead investigator, neuroscientist Charbel E-H Moussa, MB, PhD. "The potential of such an advance is very exciting." He cautions, though, that determining if this strategy is possible in humans could take many years and will involve teams of researchers.

The way to rev up protein disposal is to add parkin -- the cell's natural disposal units -- to brain cells. In this study, Moussa and his colleagues demonstrated in two animal experiments that delivering parkin genes to neurons slowed down ALS pathologies linked to TDP-43."

Moussa says that his study further demonstrates that clumps known as "inclusions" of TDP-43 protein found inside neuron bodies in both disorders do not promote these diseases, as some researchers have argued.

What happens in both diseases is that this protein, which is a potent regulator of thousands of genes, leaves the nucleus and collects inside the gel-like cytoplasm of the neuron. In ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, this occurs in motor neurons, affecting movement; in FTD, it occurs in the frontal lobe of the brain, leading to dementia.

"In both diseases, TDP-43 is over-expressed or mutated, and the scientific debate has been whether loss of TDP-43 in the nucleus or gain of TDP-43 in the cytoplasm is the problem," Moussa says.

"Our study suggests TDP-43 in the cell cytoplasm is deposited there in order to eventually be destroyed -- without contributing to disease -- and that TDP-43 in the nucleus is causing the damage," he says. "Because so much protein is being produced, the cell can't keep up with removing these toxic particles in the nucleus and the dumping of them in the cytoplasm. There may be a way to fix this problem."

Moussa has long studied parkin, a molecule best known, when mutated and inactive, for its role in a familial form of Parkinson's disease. He has studied it in Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. His hypothesis, which he has demonstrated in several recently published studies, is that parkin could help remove the toxic fragments of amyloid beta protein that builds up in the brains of Alzheimer's disease patients.

What's more, he developed a method to clear this amyloid beta when it begins to build up in neurons -- a gene therapy strategy he has shown works in rodents. Work continues on this potential therapy.

In this study, Moussa found that parkin "tags" TDP-43 protein in the nucleus with a molecule that takes it from the nucleus and into the cytoplasm of the cell. "This is good. If TDP-43 is in the cytoplasm, it will prevent further nuclear damage and deregulation of genetic materials that determine protein identity," he says.

"This discovery challenges the dogma that accumulation of TDP-43 in the cytoplasm is," Moussa says. "We think parkin is tagging proteins in the nucleus for destruction, but there just isn't enough parkin around -- compared with over-production of TDP-43 -- to do the job."

Moussa says his next research steps will be to inject a drug that activates parkin to see whether that can prolong the lifespan and reduce motor defects in mice with ALS.

This work was supported by a grant (AG30378) from the National Institutes of Health and by Georgetown University funding.

Paths of photons are random -- but coordinated

Dec. 20, 2012 ? Researchers at the Niels Bohr Institute have demonstrated that photons (light particles) emitted from light sources embedded in a complex and disordered structure are able to mutually coordinate their paths through the medium. This is a consequence of the photons' wave properties, which give rise to the interaction between different possible routes.

The results are published in the scientific journal Physical Review Letters.

The real world is complex and messy. The research field of photonics, which explores and exploits light, is no exception, and in, for example, biological systems the statistical disorder is unavoidable.

Drunken people and photons

"We work with nanophotonic structures in order to control the emission and propagation of photons. We have discovered in the meantime, that inevitable inaccuracies in the structures lead to random scattering. As a consequence, the transport of photons follow a random path -- like a drunken man staggering through the city's labyrinthine streets after an evening in the pub," explains David Garc?a, postdoc in Quantum Photonics at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen.

If we continue with this analogy, then it is not certain that just because one drunken man comes home safely, then a whole crowd of drunken people spreading out from the pub will also find their way through the city's winding streets. There is no relationship between the different random travellers.

But there is when you are talking about photons. They can 'sense' each other and coordinate their travel through a material, according to new research.

"We have inserted a very small light source in a nanophotonic structure, which contains disorder in the form of a random collection of light diffusing holes. The light source is a so-called quantum dot, which is a specially designed nanoscopic light source that can emit photons. The photons are scattered in all directions and are thrown back and forth. But photons are not just light particles, they are also waves, and waves interact with each other. This creates a link between the photons and we can now demonstrate in our experiments that the photons' path through the material is not independent from the other photons," explains David Garc?a.

Spectroscopy of complex materials

By analysing the path of the photons through the medium valuable insight is potentially gained about microscopic complex structures.

"The method could be a new way to measure the spatial properties of complex disordered materials, like biological tissue, and since the light sources are very small, you will be able to place them without destroying the material and you have the potential for very high spatial resolution," explains David Garc?a.

Canada's Carney to get $406,000 housing allowance as BoE chief

LONDON (Reuters) - Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney will get a 250,000 pound ($406,000) annual housing allowance when he starts as governor of the Bank of England next year, on top of a salary of 624,000 pounds, the BoE said on Wednesday.

The payments to the former Goldman Sachs investment banker will be well above what current BoE governor Mervyn King receives - a salary of 305,000 pounds and a generous pension.

Britain's finance minister George Osborne went to great lengths to attract Carney to Britain, changing the application process and allowing Carney to serve a five-year term rather than the eight-year term that had originally been foreseen.

While Carney's salary was announced at the time of his appointment, the scale of his housing allowance had not previously been made public.

"The (BoE's) non-executive directors ... confirmed their agreement to and support for an annual accommodation allowance of 250,000 pounds for the next governor and his family which had been offered to him prior to his appointment," the BoE said in a statement on Wednesday.

Carney's appointment comes at a time when Britain's economy is struggling to emerge from recession and the government is cutting most social benefits in real terms. The average full-time salary in Britain is 26,500 pounds a year, though this rises to 34,000 pounds in London.

The BoE has explained Carney's higher salary by noting that the central bank will take over most of Britain's bank regulation next year, and that Carney - unlike King - will not be entitled to a pension.

"The cost to the Bank of enrolling him in the now-closed pension scheme previously available to the Governor and Deputy Governors would approximate to more than 100 percent of salary," the bank said.

"This compares with the 30 percent cash allowance in lieu of pension to which the next Governor will become entitled."

The 624,000 pound salary includes this cash allowance.

Osborne has praised Carney for helping Canada avoid the worst of the financial crisis, and playing a major role in setting the international agenda on bank regulation.

5 Maya apocalypse myths debunked

On Friday, some say, the Maya apocalypse will arrive and the world will end. Fortunately, it won't.

A bold claim, we know, but if it's good enough for NASA, it's good enough for us. The space agency has already issued a press release dated Dec. 22 entitled "Why the World Didn't End Yesterday."

The Maya apocalypse predictions arise from a misunderstanding of the ancient Maya Long Count Calendar, which wraps up a 400-year cycle called a b'ak'tun on Dec. 21, 2012, the day of the winter solstice. This just so happens to be the 13th b'ak'tun in the calendar, a benchmark the Maya would have seen as a full cycle of creation.

Did you catch that? Cycle. In other words, the Maya had a cyclical view of time and would not have seen the end of their calendar cycle as the end of the world. It wasn't until Westerners began reinterpreting the calendar in the past couple decades that it got its apocalyptic overtones. [ Images: Mayan Calendar Carvings ]

Maya apocalypse rumors have proliferated on the Internet, running the gamut from beliefs that Dec. 21 will bring a new era of peace and universal understanding to predictions of a devastating astronomical event. We're all in favor of world peace, but we're here to put your fears to rest about the likelihood of planetary annihilation. Read on for five common Maya apocalypse fears and why they won't come true.

  1. Space news from NBCNews.com

    1. Moon?probes crash; impact site?named after Sally Ride

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: NASA's twin Grail spacecraft crashed as planned, in a safe "corner of the moon" that will be named after space pioneer Sally Ride.

Prediction 1: The sun will kill us all
Much has been made by Mayan doomsday fear-mongers of the fact that the sun is currently entering a maximum activity phase. The sun rotates through periods of quiet and activity that peak roughly every 11 years; active periods are marked by an increase in solar storms and flares. [ See stunning solar flare photographs ]

Some of these flares can indeed influence Earth. When the sun releases electromagnetic particles in such a way that they interact with our atmosphere, solar storms can disrupt telecommunications, though there are ways to protect satellites and other electronics. These charged particles are also responsible for the aurora ? the Northern and Southern Lights.

Predictions of a Dec. 21 solar storm that will devastate the planet are not based in reality, according to NASA scientists. This particular solar maximum is one of the "wimpiest" in recent history, according to NASA heliophysicist Lika Guhathakurta, who spoke during an online panel on the Maya apocalypse on Nov. 28. In other words, scientists have no reason to expect solar storms capable of disrupting our society.

Prediction 2: The Earth's magnetic poles will flip-flop
What is it with the Maya apocalypse and electromagnetism? This rumor holds that the North and South Poles will suddenly and catastrophically change places on Dec. 21.

The idea isn't as totally left field as it sounds: The Earth's magnetic field does actually flip-flop occasionally, though not in the course of a day. The pole swaps happen over the course of hundreds of thousands of years, according to NASA. The switching of magnetic poles could lead to a slight increase in cosmic radiation, but previous flip-flops have not disrupted the life seen in the fossil record.

Predicting the magnetic-pole switch is also tough. The last swap occurred about 780,000 years ago, which puts the planet about due for another change in the next several thousand years. However, there has been at least one period where the magnetic poles stayed put for 30 million years.

Prediction 3: Planet X will collide with Earth
Planet X, sometimes known as Nibiru, does not exist. Nevertheless, some doomsday theorizers have predicted that on Dec. 21, this "rogue planet" will slam into Earth, annihilating all life.

Planet X rumors got their start in 1976, when the late author Zecharia Sitchin claimed to have translated a Sumerian text to rediscover the lost planet Nibiru, which allegedly orbits the sun once every 3,600 years ? supposedly explaining why modern man and telescope had failed to notice this planetary neighbor. In 2003, self-described psychic and alien-channeler Nancy Lieder warned that this planet would collide with Earth. When that didn't happen, the date got pushed back to 2012 to coincide with Maya apocalypse myths.

Of course, a planet set on a collision course with Earth in mere days would be extremely visible to the naked eye. In fact, Nibiru should have shown up as nearly as bright as Mars in the night sky by April 2012, if that scenario were true. Given NASA's capacity to peer into deep space, a nearby planet headed for Earth is not going to escape detection.

"We would have seen it years ago," said Don Yeomans, the manager of NASA's Near-Earth Object program office in Pasadena, Calif.

Prediction 4: The planets will align
Another fear is that the planets will align on Dec. 21, somehow impacting our planet. This one is easy to debunk. Take it away, NASA:

"There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades," according to the space agency's 2012 doomsday myths webpage. "(E)ven if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible."

There have been planetary alignments in 1962, 1982 and 2000, according to NASA, and we're all still here.

Prediction 5: Total Earth blackout
This rumor, circulating in spam emails, claims that NASA is predicting a total Earth blackout between Dec. 23 and Dec. 25. Way to ruin Christmas!

Some emails claim that this blackout will occur as the result of the sun and Earth aligning for the first time, while others spin a wild tale about Earth entering "a still ring" called the Photonic belt. Whatever the alleged cause, this is simply not going to happen, according to NASA.

"There is no such alignment," agency officials write.

Microsoft PR Boss Repeatedly Attacks Google on Twitter

Microsoft has turned attacking Google into some sort of hobby, as the company can?t stop criticizing its Mountain View-based rival on a daily basis.

This time, the whole dispute has been triggered by a New York Times article that explains how Mark Penn, Microsoft head of strategic and special projects, is trying to help his company make millions in the ad industry using some pretty controversial strategies.

Jill Hazelbaker, one of Google?s PR officials, was quoted in the article as saying that Google likes to spend its money on lobbying, while emphasizing, ?our focus is on Google and the positive impact our industry has on society, not the competition.?

What she was actually trying to say was that Google isn?t evil. Microsoft is.

Microsoft?s PR boss Frank X. Shaw was outraged with these comments, so he moved the whole dispute on Twitter.

?Well, this is a fun kettle of fish. Could take a few tweets to unpack it all. Like a top 10 list only better,? he initially said. ?So, @jillhazelbaker how about a little light? So far this year, Google has outspent Microsoft by a factor 2.3 to 1 lobbying,? he continued, trying to ?force? Jill Hazelbaker to post a reply.

He then went on to saying that Eric Schmidt is actually blaming Microsoft for all Google?s problems, although it?s hard, if not impossible, to find an official statement of Google?s chairman that would confirm this. Here are his next tweets in chronological order:

And don?t make me laugh w/ another silly NYT quote about ?Our focus is on Google and ?.not the competition.? Really?

@jillhazelbaker says Google not focused on competitors. She better let @ericschmidt know so he stops blaming us for all their problems.

We?re happy to be quoted in this story, and @jillhazelbaker was not, but Google has been out pitching the story.

Turns out if you shine a light on Google like we did via Scroogled, Gmail man, putting privacy first, they run for the shadows.

Yes, @jillhazelbaker, that would be you. You may want to talk to @mattcutts for social media advice. Pretty easy to uncloak.

Want to talk about privacy? Name the time and place. And don?t sent the NYT next time. Or BusinessWeek. Use your own voice.

In the end, it all proved to be nothing more than a monologue, as Hazelbaker has never replied on Twitter. Maybe she?s playing hard to get or she?s simply adopting the same strategy as her employer, which refused to comment on Microsoft?s recent accusations in the Scroogled campaign.

NIH Revisits Debate On Controversial Bird Flu Research

On Tuesday, the National Institutes of Health in Maryland is holding a second day of talks about whether and how to continue funding some controversial scientific experiments.

Back in January, virologists agreed to temporarily stop research that was creating new forms of bird flu, because critics argued that the work was too dangerous. NIH officials are now seeking input from scientists and the public about how to proceed.

Scientists, national security experts and public health workers have come from all over ? including places like the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Italy, Indonesia and Vietnam ? to discuss thorny issues raised by the research.

"The subject of this meeting literally affects every individual in the world," noted Harvey Fineberg, president of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, who is helping to run the conference. "Every citizen in every country has a stake in the research that will or will not go forward with respect to these highly pathogenic agents."

These pathogenic agents are altered forms of the bird flu virus known as H5N1. H5N1 is widespread in poultry in parts of Asia and the Middle East, but it rarely infects people. Over half of those who are known to have gotten sick, however, have died.

Public health experts worry that the virus might mutate, begin spreading from person to person, and start a pandemic. Last year, NIH-funded researchers showed that certain genetic mutations could indeed make H5N1 spread easily between ferrets, the lab stand-in for people.

When word got out that scientists had created these mutant viruses, there was an uproar.

"There was an explosion of reaction, sometimes bordering on the very extreme," recalled Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. One New York Times editorial called it "An Engineered Doomsday."

So flu virologists around the world agreed to temporarily hold off on this kind of research. But some, like Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, thinks it's essential to get back to work.

Fouchier says what is learned from this research could help public health experts do things like spot an emerging pandemic, or develop vaccines. In his view, it's irresponsible to not follow-up on his initial experiments.

"All of this research is aimed to prevent flu pandemics or to mitigate their impact if they cannot be prevented altogether," Fouchier says.

Others are not so convinced, and say that if an engineered bird flu virus fell into the wrong hands or escaped the lab, it could kill millions.

"Once novel flu gets going in the population it's unlikely we could stop it," says Thomas Inglesby, with the Center for Biosecurity at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Inglesby thinks the moratorium should continue, but that if the NIH decides that it will fund more research on altered forms of H5N1 that everyone should acknowledge the risks.

"I think we should also proceed in unprecedented biosafety conditions and with international agreements on how to proceed," he says.

Officials have drafted a set of proposed criteria to help them decide whether and when to fund this kind of research in the future. For example, a proposed experiment would have to address a scientific question with high significance to public health, and there would have to be no feasible alternative methods to address the same question in a less-risky way.

One of the reasons NIH is holding this conference is to see what people think of that proposed framework.

This question of the moratorium can't be decided at this meeting because not all of the researchers who signed onto it are funded by NIH. But what the NIH says and does is influential, so what comes of this meeting and how it is incorporated into NIH decision-making could be important.

On the agenda for Tuesday is a discussion of what kinds of lab safety measures should be in place to do this kind of work. Some experts say it should be restricted to the most secure labs possible. Others say that would needlessly slow down research that's vital for understanding the threat of naturally-occurring flu pandemics.

A video of the meeting will be posted online for those who could not attend, and NIH officials say they'll be accepting emailed comments on their proposed framework for decision-making until January 10, 2013.

Why Music Moves Us

Universal emotions like anger, sadness and happiness are expressed nearly the same in both music and movement across cultures, according to new research.

The researchers found that when Dartmouth undergraduates and members of a remote Cambodian hill tribe were asked to use sliding bars to adjust traits such as the speed, pitch, or regularity of music, they used the same types of characteristics to express primal emotions. What's more, the same types of patterns were used to express the same emotions in animations of movement in both cultures.

"The kinds of dynamics you find in movement, you find also in music and they're used in the same way to provide the same kind of meaning," said study co-author Thalia Wheatley, a neuroscientist at Dartmouth University.

The findings suggest music's intense power may lie in the fact it is processed by ancient brain circuitry used to read emotion in our movement.

"The study suggests why music is so fundamental and engaging for us," said Jonathan Schooler, a professor of brain and psychological sciences at the University of California at Santa Barbara, who was not involved in the study. "It takes advantage of some very, very basic and, in some sense, primitive systems that understand how motion relates to emotion."

Universal emotions

Why people love music has been an enduring mystery. Scientists have found that animals like different music than humans and that brain regions stimulated by food, sex and love also light up when we listen to music. Musicians even read emotions better than nonmusicians.

Past studies showed that the same brain areas were activated when people read emotion in both music and movement. That made Wheatley wonder how the two were connected.

To find out, Wheatley and her colleagues asked 50 Dartmouth undergraduates to manipulate five slider bars to change characteristics of an animated bouncy ball to make it look happy, sad, angry, peaceful or scared.

"We just say 'Make Mr. Ball look angry or make Mr. Ball look happy,'" she told LiveScience. [See Videos of the Sad and Happy Bouncy Ball]

To create different emotions in "Mr. Ball," the students could use the slider bars to affect how often the ball bounced, how often it made big bounces, whether it went up or down more often and how smoothly it moved.

Another 50 students could use similar slider bars to adjust the pitch trajectory, tempo, consonance (repetition), musical jumps and jitteriness of music to capture those same emotions.

The students tended to put the slider bars in roughly the same positions whether they were creating angry music or angry moving balls.

To see if these trends held across cultures, Wheatley's team traveled to the remote highlands of Cambodia and asked about 85 members of the Kreung tribe to perform the same task. Kreung music sounds radically different from Western music, with gongs and an instrument called a mem that sounds a bit like an insect buzzing, Wheatley said. None of the tribes' people had any exposure to Western music or media, she added.

Interestingly, the Kreung tended to put the slider bars in roughly the same positions as Americans did to capture different emotions, and the position of the sliders was very similar for both music and emotions.

The findings suggest that music taps into the brain networks and regions that we use to understand emotion in people's movements. That may explain why music has such power to move us ? it's activating deep-seated brain regions that are used to process emotion, Wheatley said.

"Emotion is the same thing no matter whether it's coming in through our eyes or ears," she said.

The study is detailed today (Dec. 17) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
