Recession, Libor, Facebook punish Europe's banks

ZURICH/FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Leading European banks reported dismal profits on Tuesday, blaming everything from the continent's debt crisis and Spain's property market crash to Facebook's disastrous stock market debut.

Within a space of an hour UBS of Switzerland, Deutsche Bank , BBVA of Spain and Austria's Erste Bank delivered the bad news on an industry already beset by investigations into a number of scandals.

Deutsche Bank, Germany's flagship lender, announced it will axe 1,900 jobs under a plan to cut costs by 3 billion euros and streamline its business. New co-Chief Executive Anshu Jain said expectations on profitability had moved "closer to our grim scenario".

Banks are suffering from the euro zone crisis that politicians are struggling to solve, a transatlantic investigation into interest rate-rigging and regulators tightening the screws on the industry.

"This is the longest tunnel I have ever been in and there's no sign of light at the end of it," said an investor who is a top 10 shareholder in Royal Bank of Scotland and holds some other bank shares.

The sharp drop in profits cast doubt on whether formerly blue riband banking sectors will ever recover the levels of profitability they enjoyed before the crash of 2008-2009.

"The question is whether we are entering a new paradigm, not only in investment banking but in wealth management and other products areas that are going to see lower returns," said Chris Wheeler, analyst at Mediobanca in London. "We are not going to return to pre-crisis levels even in wealth management, the question is how much lower will it be."

UBS, which had recovered well after being bailed out by the Swiss state, reported its second-quarter profit more than halved to 425 million Swiss francs as its investment bank made a loss after trading.

The bank took a 349 million Swiss franc loss on its role as a market maker on U.S. social networking site Facebook's flotation in May.

UBS blamed U.S. stock exchange Nasdaq's "gross mishandling" of the offer and plans to take action against the exchange. Facebook shares have shed around 40 percent of their value since the company's ill-starred debut.

AWAITING A RESOLUTION

UBS Chief executive Sergio Ermotti warned investors against expecting any rapid recovery. "A return of confidence can only happen when clients believe there is a clear and lasting resolution to today's economic and political challenges, and this will take time," he said.

Weak economic growth or outright recession across Europe has hit the banking industry, not least in Spain where the government has already agreed to take up to 100 billion euros in European Union aid to save its most troubled lenders.

A property market crash and recession has hurt even BBVA , Spain's second biggest bank which is not expected to need EU help. Its first-half profit slumped by a third as it set aside cash to cover losses on its toxic real estate loans, as all the country's banks have been ordered to do.

BBVA, which is based in the relatively prosperous Basque country, will have to set aside more in the future and the impact of its sickly home market may be a drag for years.

Deutsche Bank also suffered a drop in trading at its investment bank where profit plunged 63 percent, underscoring the problems facing its new leaders.

In one of his first acts as co-CEO, former investment bank boss Jain is cutting numbers in what had been nicknamed "Anshu's Army". Most of the redundancies will come by the end of the year and be outside Germany - likely to include hundreds in London.

Costs at the investment bank represented 87 percent of income, and return on equity was just 5 percent, well below its cost of capital

In Austria, Erste Bank cut its 2012 profit outlook for the second time in three months in the face of deteriorating economies across Europe.

By later afternoon, UBS shares were down 6.2 percent, Erste shed 5.6 percent and Deutsche Bank was down 0.3 percent. BBVA was flat. The European bank index <.sx7p> dipped 2.75 percent.

MORE PAIN

Investors worry there is more pain ahead, particularly in the fallout from the rate-rigging scandal and in Britain from mis-selling insurance and complex interest rate hedging products.

Britain's Barclays was fined $453 million last month by U.S. and UK regulators for rigging interest rates, and more banks are expected to be dragged in.

More than a dozen, including UBS and Deutsche Bank, are being probed by investigators looking at whether Libor and Euribor benchmark rates were manipulated.

UBS said on Tuesday it had appropriate provisions for all litigation. Deutsche Bank did not say whether it had set aside funds for potential costs.

Corporate treasurers, pension funds, charities and other investors are seeking advice on whether to pull their money out of banks, nervous that earnings will be eroded for some time by fines.

"There appears to be a common denominator: the absence of appropriate cultural and ethical values to guide bank management and governance," said George Dallas, director of corporate governance at F&C Investments.

One bright spot is that banks have remained in the black, in contrast to the darkest days of 2008/09. Deutsche Bank may need to raise capital, some analysts reckon, but there appears unlikely to be an immediate industry-wide dash for cash.

But even banks that are performing relatively well are struggling to regain investors' trust. S olid results from HSBC , Europe's biggest bank, on Monday were overshadowed by its $2 billion hit to cover fines and mis-selling.

Olympics Beach volleyball: Life's a beach at Horse Guards Parade where beach volleyball has taken Britain by storm

By Damien Gayle

|

Beach volleyball babes were getting wet and wild (and, er, cold) at Horse Guards Parade today after the venue was treated to a true taste of British summer.

The heavens opened over the Westminster venue, with spectators breaking out the umbrellas and ponchos at the open-air arena and players covering themselves with towels during breaks in play.

Vast swathes of the stands lay abandoned as women from Spain beat the Netherlands in the driving rain during their preliminary match just after midday today.

But the home crowd were given reason to cheer this afternoon as Great Britain duo Shauna Mullin and Zara Dampney made a dream start to their Olympic campaign, defeating Canada's Marie-Andree Lessard and Annie Martin.

Weather-beaten fans were even treated to flashes of sunshine as the British pair prevailed in an absorbing Pool F contest, showing flashes of real quality on their way to a gripping 17-21 21-14 15-13 victory.

Mullin and Dampney will take great encouragement from their performance and will hope for more of the same in their next preliminary phase match against Italy's Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti on Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, as the clouds drew in over central London, many of the spectators abandoned their seats for warmer, drier conditions indoors.

Those who stuck around watched Spain's Liliana Fernandez Steiner and Elsa Baquerizo McMillan come from a set down to secure victory over Holland.

The pair lost the opener against Marleen van Iersel and Sanne Keizer but eventually overcame both the opposition and the elements on their way to a 14-21 21-16 15-11 Pool D win.

The Dutch looked comfortable as they took the first set by seven points, with Van Iersel in particular a threat at the net.

But as the weather deteriorated the Spaniards came to life, and led by strong services games by Baquerizo McMillan - who provided all six aces served in the match - rattled off the next two sets to ensure their campaign began on a high.

These two sides are also due to take on host nation Great Britain as part of their women's Pool F programme, and it was the Italians who stole an early march in the group with a 17-21 21-8 15-8 win in 56 minutes.

Plenty took to Twitter as they watched what could be the most popular Olympic event among men today. 'Wet womens beach volleyball! TV doesnt get much better than this!' wrote Toon_jack, while carl_army tweeted: 'Women's beach volleyball is boss #wedgieseverywere.'

Niall Brophy wrote simply: 'Ah yes. Women's beach volleyball. :)'

The conditions were a far cry from those enjoyed by spectators and players at Horse Guards yesterday where it was bikinis, beer and Benny Hill as the beach volleyball kicked off and seemed the Olympics hottest ticket.

As the sun beat down, beautifully built competitors cast the venue's historic architectural sights in to the shade as they digged, spiked and bumped the ball across the sandpit in the heart of the capital.

Teams from China and Russia, Czech Republic and Poland, Australia and the U.S., Switzerland and Greece were all competing in the preliminary matches on the 2012 Games' opening day.

But the vast majority of the 15,000 spectators had little interest in the nationalities of those taking part. They had come to see scantily dressed athletes getting hot and sweaty.

Organisers had done their best to encourage a sea-side postcard atmosphere to the proceedings, with the Benny Hill theme tune played during every break in play and an over-excited announcer doing his best to stir up an already electrified audience.

And for those moments between matches where the crowd had no athletes to admire, cheerleaders in Fifties style swept onto the court for provocative dance routines that sent the crowd as wild as any rally.

Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh made the perfect start to their bid for a third successive Olympic beach volleyball gold medal with victory over Australia in the day's concluding game.

The American duo, champions at Athens in 2004 and Beijing four years ago, were made to work all they way for the win 21-18 21-19 against the Australian duo of 2000 gold medal winner Natalie Cook and Tamsin Hinchley.

Unfortunately for those watching, in a game that got under way at 11pm and with temperatures around the 13 degrees Centigrade mark, both teams opted to don warmer clothing for the match.

The Australians selected legging and long-sleeved tops, while the Americans were happy just cover up their top halves.

After the reigning champions edged a close first set, the second proved even more enthralling, with May-Treanor and Walsh trailing 13-9 at one stage. A run of four straight points brought them back level, before the game ebbed and flowed the rest of the way.

Eventually the American pair came through on their first match-point chance, winning a brilliant rally which stood as a fitting conclusion to an exciting opening day.

The day began with an upset in the very first match as second seeds Xue Chen and Zhang Xi slipped to defeat against Russia in Pool B.

Xue and Zhang, bronze medallists in Beijing four years ago, are among the favourites for gold this time but made a poor start to their Olympic quest as they fell to a 18-21 21-14 16-14 loss to Anastasia Vasina and Anna Vozakova.

China never looked at their best throughout the contest, and only just got across the line in a 20-minute opening set that could have gone either way.

The 21st-ranked Russians responded well in the next, taking the set comfortably, before the third - deciding sets are first to 15, rather than 21 - went to the wire.

China looked home and dry when they ran up two match points at 14-12, but some great defensive play saw the Russians pull back level, before they forced match point for themselves at 15-14, which was converted when Vasina's spike cannoned out of bounds off the helpless Zhang.

Germany's Katrin Holtwick and Ilka Semmler posted a straight-sets 21-16 21-18 win over the Czech Republic's Lenka Hajeckova and Hana Klapalova in Pool A, while in the penultimate women's match of the day Switzerland's Simone Kuhn and Nadine Zumkehr beat Vasiliki Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani 21-13 21-19.

In the men's tournament, heavily fancied Brazilians Ricardo Santos and Pedro Cunha started their campaign with a straight-sets win over Norway's Tarjei Skarlund and Martin Spinnangr in Pool F.

Ricardo is one of the great names of the sport and is bidding for a fourth Olympic medal - following on from his silver at Sydney 2000, gold at Athens 2004 and bronze in Beijing - and he and his team-mate looked in good touch today as they ran out 21-14 21-18 winners.

Also in Pool F, Great Britain duo Steve Grotowski and John Garcia-Thompson went down to a 21-19 21-13 defeat to Joshua Binstock and Martin Reader of Canada.

Earlier the men's tournament kicked off with an impressive win for Latvia's Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Ruslans Sorokins in Pool D.

The Latvians made a slow start against Mariusz Prudel and Grzegorz Fijalek of Poland, losing the first set, but recovered well to post a 12-21 21-15 15-12 victory.

In Pool C, Germany's Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann defeated Russia's Konstantin Semenov and Serguei Prokopiev 21-19 21-17, while Switzerland's Seba Chevallier and Sascha Heyer defeated Xu Linyin and Wu Penggen of China 18-21 21-16 15-12.

The final men's match of the day, in Pool D, saw United States duo Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal defeat South Africa's Freedom Chiya and Grant Goldschmit 21-10 21-11.

Pattana Blog Attaching Wood To Concrete

A very important tip is to use the right tool for each method. When you're dealing with concrete and masonry, you're obviously dealing with extremely hard material. Woodworking hammers are too light and steel drill bits too soft. The concrete is also brittle. Hard sharp chips are likely to fly out as you work on it, so always wear safety goggles to protect your eyes.Nails. Nailing wood directly to concrete is probably the simplest, quickest and cheapest method. Unfortunately, once driven, these nails may jar loose from a few hammer blows to the side of the board. So, they are better for temporary fastening. You'll usually find two types of special nails at the hardware store, cut nails and hardened concrete nails. Drive nails with a 2- to 4-lb. hammer. Actually, it's very hard to drive nails into cured (hardened) concrete, even with a 4-lb. hammer. They work best in concrete that's only cured for a few days.Nails can be quite effective in mortar joints, however. Mortar is softer than either the concrete block or brick, and it holds nails fairly well. For best results, drive them right along the joint edge. And here's a professional tip: for improved holding power, run a bead of glue along the backside of your wood before nailing it up.Predrilled Fasteners. There is a family of fasteners that can be driven into a predrilled hole. These not only fasten wood to concrete, but will fasten just about anything else to concrete as well. They install easily, simply drill through the wood and into the concrete and drive the fastener.Drilling the hole is the only difficult part. Use a carbide tip bit. Because these holes are relatively small, your standard 1/4-inch or 3/8 inch power drill can do an adequate job, although each hole may take several minutes to bore. A hammer drill, however, will drill your hole in a matter of seconds. A hammer drill is expensive, but they can be rented. If you have a lot of holes to drill, they'll save a lot of time. It's a good idea to glue your wood to the concrete or masonry with this system as well, especially when using screws. Once screws are jarred loose, they may not retighten.Expansion Fasteners. These fasteners are simple, effective and can carry a heavy load. They may be retightened should they be jarred loose.Because they require a larger hole, you really need a hammer drill to bore the concrete. If you can't buy, borrow or rent one, try boring a 1/8 inch hole first with a carbide bit. Then use progressively larger carbide bits until you reach the proper size.Buy these fasteners long enough to wedge into the concrete as deep as the wood is thick. Drill your hole an extra 1/4 inch deep, since the bolt draws back slightly when tightened.Power Fasteners. These are extremely fast, powerful and dangerous. They are primarily professional tools which any untrained homeowner should steer clear of until they fully understanding the safety precautions. With power fasteners you can quickly nail into just about any concrete or masonry surface. Both the air and the power-actuated systems drive hardened nails through the wood and solidly into the concrete in one shot. Flying metal, wood or concrete are certain hazards, so eye protection is essential.Glue. Over the past ten years construction adhesives have improved and become more specialized. You can securely glue just about anything to a wall now. Since glued wood must be held tightly in place until the glue sets, it's handy to use an adhesive with another fastening system for mutual reinforcement; the glue dampens the vibration and jarring that may weaken the fasteners, and the fasteners hold the wood tightly until the glue sets.Proper preparation ensures a good glue bond. Be sure the wood and the concrete surfaces are clean and dry. Loose paint, surface chalking or moisture will cause the bond to release. When working with a very rough surface, apply a generous bead to bridge the wider gaps between the wood and concrete.

Igniting Your Business Spark ? hot news

Entrepreneurialism and business go hand in hand, and igniting your initial business spark and passion is an important process in getting any business venture off the ground. Without that spark of entrepreneurialism, no business venture could ever take off, and no business risks would be taken, resulting in fewer large entities and ultimately fewer jobs. Thus entrepreneurialism is fundamental to the success of our society and the economy as a whole. But how do you go about igniting your spark of entrepreneurialism to get things off the ground? What???s more, how can your business benefit from entrepreneurialism and innovation through its business areas?

Entrepreneurialism is essential to the success of business. Your business can only survive long term by adopting an entrepreneurialism approach to how decisions are made. Entrepreneurialism states that a business must be dynamic and responsive to change, and this requires a constant spark of entrepreneurialism to maintain throughout any organisation. As a business owner, it???s up to you to show those sparks of entrepreneurialism to get your business moving and competing with rival business owners within your industry. It???s up to you to innovate and challenge the perceptions and limitations within your industry to gain a competitive edge and to boost your chances of success.

Entrepreneurialism impacts on whether your business takes risks or rejects them. Depending on whether you???re passionate about the approach of entrepreneurialism, your business may or may not pursue the risky strategies that can deliver significant returns, provided the increased risks are minimised. Hence adopting an entrepreneurial approach can bring increase rewards to your business, provided you???re willing to run the natural increased risks associated accordingly.

Igniting that spark of entrepreneurialism can give your business an injection of life, and can lead you to pursue more adventurous sales avenues and cost cutting methods. After a period of stagnation, finding something to reignite your spark can work wonders for your business. It might be as a result of some failure, or some sign of success, but no matter what the stimulus, your spark must be diverted into profitable channels for your business, and you will notice a resulting improvement in sales and profits as a consequence. Entrepreneurialism is a power tool to have on your side, and that passion and confidence keen entrepreneurialism brings can be particularly effective in helping your business to flourish.

Igniting that spark of entrepreneurialism is key to the success and future growth of business, as well as your short term profitability. Without that initial motivation to go forward, take the risk and get involved in business, and to continue this spirit through the initial years and further beyond, no venture could ever get started or grow to any significant degree. Americans Know That Old-fashioned Operators No Lengthier Have ...

Americans know that old-fashioned operators no lengthier have to sit at desks and unplug wires from 1 link and move it to another link in order for individuals to talk on the telephone. Fortunately, new technology has taken us a number of steps farther. Voice over Web Protocol (VoIP) converts the analog audio signals of a telephone discussion into digital data that can be transmitted through a pc.

VoIP business telephone systems have become a groundbreaking technology that could completely change the world?s method of communication. Particular companies have already been effective for awhile, and carry on to develop. This accomplishment has even pressured major phone carriers to established up contacting plans utilizing this technologies in several markets around the United States. Its success price has also brought on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to look at the possible outcome of this services.

Several elements make VoIP business telephone systems a favored option for numerous business owners. Financial financial savings, portability, ease of use, and added functions make this unconventional technique of communication appealing for office phone systems.

Save Money

Because VoIP business telephone methods can flip a regular web link into a technique for putting reduced price calls, much more and much more companies are selecting this non-traditional choice. By utilizing some of the software program that is accessible to make internet calls, companies can bypass the telephone company and its fees all together. These services offer a easy, all-inclusive cost for each consumer without necessitating the buy of routers, additional components, or numerous lines.

Larger businesses with more than a couple of employees can advantage significantly from VoIP. With worldwide contacting, video conferencing, a number of branch offices, and a global worker base, businesses can take benefit thirty day period following month of the potential savings. With non-traditional office telephone methods, executives can effortlessly handle their communications spending budget, as there is no continuous accumulation of charges for each function.

Appreciate Clear Discussions

Analog indicators degrade as they travel more than lines from their original location to their destination. On the other hand, Voice over Web Protocol utilizes information indicators which stay intact with the same power and clarity they taken care of at their origin stage. By merely putting in a software program plan on a pc, a company can obtain all the benefits that arrive from utilizing these types of office phone methods.

Rousey, Kaufman, Carano ? The World According to Munah

In case you were wondering, female mixed martial arts is still very much alive and kicking.? The latest installment of the Invicta Fighting Championships is this Saturday night, and in August, Strikeforce returns to Showtime with a main event that will feature champ Ronda Rousey attempting to remove challenger Sarah Kaufman's arm in the most painful, non-surgical way possible.? Yep.? Wimmins.? They be fightin'.? So in the spirit of all this impending violence perpetrated by the fairer sex, Cagewriter tracked down 125-pound female fighter Munah Holland, who knocked out Strikeforce veteran Carina Damm two weeks ago at Matrix Fights (a regional show in Philadelphia) to get her perspective on things.? She is, after all, on the front lines.

Things to know about Holland: she's a product of the Tiger Schulmann MMA system, and manages one of the organization's gyms in New Jersey.? In 2004, she won the prestigious Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, transitioned to professional fighting with Chuck Norris' ill-fated kickboxing promotion the World Combat League, and now fights in the cage, shimmying out of the clutches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and feeding them knuckles until they fall.? ?In her MMA debut, Holland brutalized Kim Couture for three rounds; more recently, she's KO'd top New England fighter Marianna Kheyfets in Bellator and put away Damm.?

That's Holland.? Here's what she had to say about some of her fellow fighters:

On Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey - "Ronda is, I would say, this deliciously deadly, amazing person.? She has something that, when I watch her fight, is incredibly contained, and at the same time, explosive.? It's really fun to watch, and her ground game is sick.? She is definitely a force to be reckoned with, no matter her opponent in front of her.? I can't wait for the upcoming fight between her and Sarah Kaufman ? I think that's going to be a great fight."

On top Strikeforce bantamweight challenger and former champ Sarah Kaufman - "I've watched Sarah for a long time, because as a female martial artist, she was one of the girls I knew about first.? She's got really, really powerful hands ? like, lead in her hands.? She's very dangerous.? She's constantly evolving? got a lot of heart, and like Ronda, she's a force to be reckoned with.? And Sarah has some very good wrestling, so it's going to be interesting, because if Sarah can maintain her wrestling defense and use her hands and use her range, it could be a really interesting fight.? If it stays standing, Sarah can do some damage with her hands.? We haven't really seen Ronda's chin, we don't know how much damage it can take."? Her prediction for the August 18 Strikeforce title fight?? "If it stays standing, Sarah's going to have the advantage.? If it goes to the ground, my gut says Ronda."

On former Strikeforce bantamweight champ Miesha Tate - "I love Miesha.? I once said this out loud and people heard me, but if you have a bum that looks like Miesha's, you've got to plaster it everywhere.? She's beautiful, she's tough as nails.? And that fight with Ronda, that was sick."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Gina Carano - "Gina, I think, has done a world of good for female fighting in general.? She's chosen her own path, and gone the way she feels where her future lies.? You have to do whatever it is you have to do in this world to have a life and a good living, but I thank her for exposing female martial artists to the world, and making it important for people to watch and making it exciting for people to watch, and proving that, regardless of whether it's females or males, it's just a great sport to watch.? She proved that the numbers can be there, that the seats can be filled for female mixed martial artists just as they can for men."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Cris "Cyborg" Santos ? "Cyborg would scare most grown men away in the cage.? The first time I saw Cris Cyborg, I was like, 'Uh, this woman is just frightening.'? And frightening in a good way.? What a beast.? What a beast of mass proportions.? This girl? frightening strength, amazing ability coming from Chute Boxe, can really take so much.? She's just like a pitbull.? She's just going to keep on coming and keep on coming."

On female MMA pioneer Tara LaRosa - "Long before Gina or Cyborg came into the picture, you'd hear about Tara just making her way through one person after another in the circuit ? especially in New Jersey, where she's got a lot of fans.? For me, she was definitely an inspiration.? We can do it, we can do it really well and with a lot of class."

On hoping to fight in the UFC one day - "Oh yeah.? Some little girls want to grow up and wear pink slippers, but for me, the thought of being in the UFC?? I hope it gets to that point for women, I hope it gets to that point in my MMA lifetime.? We can only hope for that.? Who wouldn't want to be in that arena?"

On Dana White reconsidering his stance on not allowing women in the UFC's Octagon - "I don't know any woman who wouldn't want to see women in the UFC, and I hope Dana White considers that at some point.? Because we'll bring the crowds, we'll fill the seats, and people really enjoy watching it."

?

Jim Genia tweets here and wrote this book.? So what?

Buy Low cost Cell Telephones For Sale ? However Only If They ...

With the lowering prices of cell phones and the elevated requirement of mobile communications for a diverse vary of individuals, cheap cell telephones have develop into fairly common. Either it is the cell phone manufacturer providing them by slashing costs, or it?s the storekeeper offering heavy reductions on outdated phones. Nonetheless, a mobile phone just isn?t complete and can?t expertise optimum usage unless and until it has some Att Caps Data particular accessories.

The cost of these accessories relies on the model and model of cellular that you?ve got bought. For example, the cost of a specific brands? headphone could also be equal to the cost of the starter fashions of another cellphone manufacturer. Due to this fact, in case you are buying low-cost telephone from a sale, be sure that these equipment are a part of the deal:

Headphones:

When some music oriented cell phones first invaded the market, they did not supply headphones, however at present most cell phones offer the rudimentary and standard headphones as a bundle deal. Moscow anti-Putin rally draws 1,500

Russian protesters on Thursday called for the release of activists they called political prisoners and urged the nation to unite against Vladimir Putin's crackdown on civil society.

About 1,500 citizens and members of the motley opposition movement packed a central Moscow square to protest the detention of people arrested after clashes on the eve of Putin's inauguration to a third term in May.

A Moscow demonstration on May 6 erupted into street battles with riot police in some of the worst violence since unprecedented protests against Putin's decade-long rule first shook Russia late last year.

Investigators said earlier Thursday they had detained two more activists as part of their probe. Those detentions came on top of 14 activists already under investigation including 12 who have been arrested.

Thursday's rally grew into a show of support for other jailed activists including three members of all-girl punk band Pussy Riot who called for Putin's ouster in an unsanctioned Moscow cathedral performance in February.

Earlier this month the three women were ordered to stay in pre-trial detention until January. They could face up to seven years in prison.

Opposition activists told Thursday's rally the authorities sought to intimidate society into silence and called on Russians to fight back.

"They declared a war on us!" leftist leader Sergei Udaltsov said.

Mark Feigin, one of Pussy Riot defence lawyers, called on those gathered to attend mass rallies scheduled for September and October when more protests are expected after a relative lull in summer.

"To their rejection of law there is a response of the street," he said.

Activists accuse the Kremlin of a ruthless crackdown on the nascent opposition movement since Putin's return for a historic third term.

An AFP correspondent estimated the turnout Thursday at around 1,500. Police said 800 people had turned up, including 150 journalists and bloggers, and they said they had detained one man.

The crowd chanted "Russia without Putin" while slogans read "They are behind bars so that you live in fear" and "Down with the Inquisition".

Several activists recited poems from the stage in a move reminiscent of a Soviet-era tradition that saw dissidents gather in central Moscow to read poetry under the watchful eye of the KGB security service.

Rights activist Yury Dzhibladze said Russia was increasingly looking like neighbouring Belarus whose government has been the subject of Western sanctions due to clampdowns on the opposition.

"The situations in our countries are quickly becoming alike," said Dzhibladze, holding a placard reading "Solidarity is stronger than repression".

Some at the rally expressed doubt that the authorities would take notice of the protesters' demands.

"Those who make decisions do not give a damn about this crowd," Mikhail Kavun, a geologist, told AFP. "I am here to express moral support."

As part of the probe into the May 6 violence, police last month raided the homes of prominent opposition leaders including Udaltsov, anti-corruption blogger Alexei Navalny and TV host Ksenia Sobchak, who is the daughter of Putin's late mentor and former Saint Petersburg mayor Anatoly Sobchak.

Around 1.5 million euros ($1.8 million) have been seized from Sobchak as part of the investigation into the violence. A Moscow court earlier Thursday dismissed her request to have the money returned.

Researchers in Newcastle and Singapore have identified a new type of white blood cell which activates a killing immune response to an external source providing a new potential target for vaccines for conditions such as cancer or Hepatitis B.

Publishing in the journal Immunity, the team of researchers from Newcastle University in collaboration with A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) describe a new human tissue dendritic cell with cross-presenting function.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are a type of white blood cell that orchestrate our body's immune responses to infectious agents such as bacteria and viruses, as well as cancer cells. They are also very important for eliciting the immune response generated by vaccines.

DCs kick start an immune response by presenting small fragments of molecules from micro-organisms such as bacteria and viruses, or from vaccines or tumours, called antigens on their surface. This leads to activation of another white blood cell subset called T cells, which specialise in killing cells and are crucial for eliminating cancerous or infected cells. Most cells are only able to present antigens from within themselves, and so will only elicit an immune response if they are infected themselves. Only a specialised subset of DCs is able to generate a response to an external source of antigen, for example bacteria, vaccines and tumours.

The identity of human tissue DCs that are capable of presenting external antigen to activate the cell-killing response by T cells - a process termed 'cross-presentation' - has remained a mystery. Their discovery, as revealed by this research, will help scientists to design better targeted vaccine strategies to treat cancer and infections such as Hepatitis B.

"These are the cells we need to be targeting for anti-cancer vaccines," said Dr Muzlifah Haniffa, a Wellcome Trust Intermediate Fellow and Senior Clinical Lecturer at Newcastle University. "Our discovery offers an accessible, easily targetable system which makes the most of the natural ability of the cell."

The researchers also showed for the first time that dendritic cell subsets are conserved between species and have in effect created a map, facilitating the translation of mouse studies to the human immune system.

"The cross-species map is in effect a Rosetta stone that deciphers the language of mouse into human", explains Matthew Collin, Professor of Haematology from Newcastle University.

In the paper the researchers describe how the cross-presenting DCs were first isolated from surplus plastic surgery skin which was digested to melt the gelatinous collagen to isolate the cells.

This research will have significant impact on the design of vaccines and other targeted immunotherapies.

The Rosetta Stone of our immune system: Mapping Human and Mouse dendritic cells

The Newcastle University team in collaboration with A*STAR's Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN) have for the first time ever aligned the dendritic cell subsets between mouse and humans allowing the accurate translation of mouse studies into the human model for the first time.

The researchers isolated the dendritic cells from human blood and skin and those from mouse blood, lung and liver. Using gene expression analysis, they identified gene signatures for each human dendritic cell subset. Mouse orthologues of these genes were identified and a computational analysis was performed to match subsets across species.

This provides scientists for the first time with an accurate model to compare DCs between species.

Professor Matthew Collin explains: "This is in effect a Rosetta stone that deciphers the language of mouse into human. It can put into context the findings from the extensive literature using mouse models to the human settings".

Dr. Haniffa added: "These gene signatures are available in a public repository accessible for all researchers to benefit from the data. It will allow detailed knowledge of individual human dendritic cell subsets to enable specific targeting of these cells for therapeutic strategy."

Obama and Romney fight for suburban women in Colo.

CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ? If President Barack Obama wins this swing-voting state, and a second term as president, voters like Paula Burky will probably be the reason.

"He understands women," said Burky, a Westminster resident who last month decided to vote for Obama.

Both the Democratic president and his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, see women ? specifically suburbanites from their 30s to their 50s ? as critical to victory in Colorado as well as in other hard-fought places like Virginia and Nevada where polls also show close contests. That means this group of voters may also hold the key to winning the White House.

The state of the campaign in the sprawling Denver region ? modest neighborhoods and upscale subdivisions near the city give way to retail complexes, industrial parks and front-range ranches at the outskirts ? illustrates how the fight is playing out across the nation, and how both candidates are seeking to woo these female voters in different ways.

Obama has stirred passions among Colorado women by stoking fears about abortion rights, spending the past few weeks sharply criticizing Romney in ads for proposing to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood and opposing the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade decision.

Romney, in turn, has paid for mail and automated calls in Colorado decrying Obama's handling of the sluggish economy's effect on women.

Just over 100 days until the election, polls in Colorado show a close race, though it's unclear how the electorate's psyche will be impacted by last week's shooting massacre at a suburban Denver movie complex and a summer wildfire season that has scorched countless homes and businesses.

For now at least, Obama has had the edge over female voters nationally and he is focusing on a particularly promising subset: college-educated women. Fifty-five percent of college-educated women preferred Obama in a June Associated Press-GfK poll, while 40 percent preferred Romney.

Women with college degrees make up 27 percent of Colorado voters, according to exit polls from the 2008 election, higher than the national average of 23 percent. That puts Colorado in league with other prime Romney-Obama targets, Virginia and New Hampshire.

Burky is among those who have gravitated toward Obama. She and her husband were unemployed for eight months until recently, while their teenage daughter was recovering from cancer. Burky was swayed by Obama's action last spring ? opposed by Romney ? to make it easier for women to obtain birth control, a move she said has economic repercussions.

"If women are choosing abortion because they are in dire economic straits, I have a moral obligation to vote for the candidate who is going to help them," Burky said.

Jill Wildenburg, an Obama supporter who lives in Englewood, calls the president's focus "huge because if women's reproductive rights are marginalized, then women are marginalized."

To press his argument that he's on the side of women, Obama sponsored a national women's summit last month in Colorado ? in Jefferson County ? featuring senior White House adviser Valerie Jarrett and "Desperate Housewives" actress Eva Longoria. The week before he dispatched first lady Michelle Obama to Arapahoe High School in Centennial.

Obama is partly borrowing from the playbook of Colorado Democrat Michael Bennet's winning U.S. Senate race in 2010. Bennet narrowly beat Ken Buck after painting him as extreme in pointed TV ads about the Republican's opposition to abortion rights and popular forms of birth control. He carried Arapahoe and Jefferson counties by a combined 10,000 votes, about a third of his narrow margin over Buck.

"That portrayal of Buck is what beat him," said Democratic pollster Paul Harstad, an adviser to Bennet who also does polling for Obama's campaign.

Some Romney backers argue that Obama is attempting to distract female voters from the economy by emphasizing abortion.

"It has nothing to do with abortion," said Vickie Dow of Centennial, an upscale Arapahoe County suburb. "I'm worried about the economy. I'm really afraid things have gone downhill terribly."

Unemployment in Colorado was 8.2 percent in June, the same as nationally. It has ticked up slightly statewide and proportionally in Arapahoe and Jefferson counties, Denver's south and west suburbs where more than 20 percent of the state's population lives, after a slow decline over the past year when it dipped below the national average.

Romney, meanwhile, is seeking to court women like Debbie Brown of Centennial. She agrees with Republican pollsters who say that women are more acutely aware of economic ups and downs. Often household budget managers, women are more sensitive to fluctuations in the economy and see them as destabilizing to their families.

"It actually becomes a heart issue for them because they care so much about their families," said Brown, whose husband recently began working again after being unemployed for nine months.
