Does your Online Fundraising stand out? by Connect To Charity

Non-profit online fundraising guidelines include donation buttons, web based auctions, and online periodical fundraiser.

There are numerous methods which you can raise funds online like asking donations, auctioning, and selling publication subscriptions. Whatever certain approach will work best for your institution, bear in mind that you can utilize more than one strategy to raise money over the internet. Here you?ll know a few great charitable online fundraising tips.

Gift buttons

Having donation buttons is most likely the simplest way to raise money online. Additionally, it is also very easy for your donors to donate funds to your organization. All you have to do is put a donation button in your website where you can also have a script for others so they can place your donation button in their websites as well. Google Checkout and PayPal are 2 of the best service providers which can assist you to setup a gift button easily in your website. By doing this your donors can easily click and give their donations. Nevertheless, the best gift buttons are those which are found in sites of other people or companies. Perhaps you have a business that is connected to your nonprofit organization, or you have a number of volunteers who also have their personal websites. You can share the script of your gift button to be placed in these other sites so your donation button will have more exposure.

Web based auctions

Another awesome idea to raise cash is through non profit auctions over the internet or online auctions. In case you and the people in your institution have items that are still in excellent condition and want to auction them off, then this method will simply help you raise the amount of cash you need. Apart from personal items, some of the typical things which are sold on the internet include behind the scenes passes, live concert tickets, dinner dates with qualified bachelors, or celebrity objects. You can put in computer auction software or you can also use one of the numerous online auction websites. Each of these auction websites has its own specific policies. For instance, one website will require you to spend a registration fee and display as many items as you want, while others are have totally free registration but will ask a particular percentage of your income. Select which one will suit your needs best, particularly if you are trying to save every cent which you have.

Online publication fundraiser

You can also participate an online newspaper fundraiser to raise cash for your institution. You just have to sign-up to an online newspaper fundraising company to which you?ll then be provided a website for it. After that, acquire contact information of people who would potentially subscribe to a particular kind of journal. The company will then send the email addresses you collected with an invitation to sign up to one of their journals. And when the users of the email addresses which you submitted buy a subscription for a magazine, you will automatically obtain a certain percentage for it. The important thing here is to attain as many customers as possible to increase your profits even more. You can ask all your family members, relatives, as well as good friends. Posting your online newspaper fundraising website on your online community site will also help you acquire more clients and therefore more earnings for your fundraising organization.

It is important to be transparent and genuine in your fundraising organization and to always send your donors a thank you message so your organization will continue to be supported.

Iran doubles underground nuclear capacity -UN agency

VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran has doubled the number of uranium enrichment machines it has in an underground bunker, a U.N. report said on Thursday, showing Tehran continued to defy Western pressure to stop its atomic work and the threat of Israeli attack.

In the weeks and months when Israeli politicians increased their talk of air strikes on Iran's nuclear sites, the Islamic Republic was rapidly increasing the enrichment capacity of its Fordow site, buried deep underground to withstand any such hit.

The U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in its quarterly report on Iran that the number of centrifuges at Fordow, near the holy Shi'ite Muslim city of Qom, about 130 km (80 miles) from THE CAPITAL Tehran, had more than doubled to 2,140 from 1,064 in May.

The new machines were not yet operating, it said.

Iran's supreme leader repeated this week that Iran's nuclear program was entirely peaceful. "Our motto is nuclear energy for all and nuclear weapons for none," Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told a developing nations summit in Tehran.

But the expansion in enrichment infrastructure and the increasing in stockpiles of potent nuclear material revealed in the report will do nothing to allay fears or reduce the diplomatic and sanctions pressure on Iran.

The report showed that Iran had produced nearly 190 kg (418 pounds) of higher-grade enriched uranium since 2010, up from 145 kg in May.

Iran says it needs this material - which is much purer than fuel needed for electricity generation - for a medical research reactor, but it also takes it significantly closer to making potential bomb material.

The IAEA also expressed concerns about Parhcin, a military site south of the capital that it wants to inspect for evidence of past nuclear weapons development.

"Significant ground scraping and landscaping have been undertaken over an extensive area at and around the location," it said.

Five buildings had been demolished and power lines, fences and paved roads removed, the report said, "extensive activities" that would hamper its investigation if granted access.

"The activities observed ... further strengthen the agency's assessment that it is necessary to have access to the location at Parchin without further delay", the IAEA said.

Iran says Parchin is a conventional military facility and has dismissed the allegations about it as "ridiculous".

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, meeting U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in Tehran on Thursday, was quoted by Iranian state TV as saying: "The West has put sanctions on Iran for years, however the Iranian nation continues to resist and make progress."

A Western diplomat said the doubling of enrichment capacity at Fordow was a "worrying trend" showing that Tehran continued to expand its program.

Over 8,000 regime forces killed in Syria, military official says

More than 8,000 members of the security forces have been killed since Syria's anti-regime uprising broke out in March 2011, the director of the capital's Tishrin military hospital said on Thursday.

"I estimate that at least 8,000 soldiers and members of the security forces have been killed since the beginning of the crisis," the director, a doctor who also holds the rank of general, said on condition of not being named.

"Every day, we receive an average of 15 to 20 bodies of soldiers and members of security forces, with the numbers increasing since the beginning of the year," he told an AFP reporter.

Tishrin received 47 bodies on Wednesday, but in late July?when fighting raged in the capital as the rebels tried to seize control?"we received more than 100 people daily for three days," the doctor said.

"Approximately 70 percent of military casualties are transported to our hospital and the rest are sent to hospitals in other provinces," he added.

Around 60 percent of the victims were killed by gunfire, while 35 percent died in explosions, including anti-tank rockets, and five percent were "slaughtered or beheaded," according to the doctor.

The number of wounded was "somewhat higher," the doctor said, without giving an exact figure. He noted, however, that the vast majority of injuries were to the legs and arms.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, nearly 6,500 soldiers and members of the security forces have been killed over the past 17 months, out of a total death toll of more than 25,000 people, mostly civilians.

Dispatches From the Republican National Convention

Condoleezza Rice's turn on stage seemed to be evidence of a speaker in? search of an argument, as though a production company lined up a star? actor cast before determining the plot.?"Where does America stand?"? she asked in the?midst of a litany of global ills?from sex-trafficking to the Syrian revolution?in which she suggested,? through some sleight of hand, that the United States had failed to take a ?stand. "My fellow Americans, we do not have a choice," she said. "We ?must not be reluctant to lead, and you can not lead from behind."

??But in no instance did she say what a leaderly America would do.?For ?all the disruptions in Romney's belief system, there is an unusual? continuity in his foreign-policy posture: He became a hawk in 2007? when one facing McCain and Giuliani in a Republican primary in the era ?of Bush would not risk otherwise. Then hawkishness had obvious policy ?ramifications, particularly support for continued commitments in Iraq.??

Now that hawkishness is something of an artifact, where the posture? lives on but without much policy to support the shape?as though the? only way to challenge a Democrat for the presidency is to run ?rightward on national security.?Romney has been left parading into ?rhetorical battle with Russia and China, dubbing the former a ?number? one geopolitical foe" and threatening a trade war with the latter over? currency issues.??

Rice, the Cold Warrior, didn't seem ready to march in either of those ?parades.?She barely mentioned Russia or China, and when she spoke of? the latter it was in awe of how much more aggressive Beijing has been? than Washington in negotiating new free-trade agreements. "Sadly we? are abandoning the playing field of free trade," Rice said, "and it? will come back to haunt us."??

Have we learned anything yet this week about what a Romney foreign ?policy might be, other than occasional suggestions that Obama is a? vacillating weakling? Is it anything other than critiquing from? behind??

"Vaginismus" A Psychological Condition That Affects Womens ...

?"Vaginismus" A Psychological Condition That Affects Womens Sexuality. Are You Aware of it?

A woman's virginity has long been a cultural fixation. From abstinence pledges and purity balls ? wherein teenage girls promise their Evangelical fathers they'll remain virgins until marriage ? to the abject quackery that suggests virginity causes cancer, many people are quick to take sides in the imaginary moral war.

But I am quick to dismiss any discussion of morality, as I often find myself counselling some of the unwitting casualties.

While saving oneself for marriage is a personal choice, there is an unexpected condition that can affect some women who are waiting for Mr Right ? vaginismus.

Vaginismus is not due to a physical abnormality. Some women wonder if their vagina is too small or they have no vaginal opening at all and that is the reason why sex is so difficult. But in most cases the vagina is perfectly normal and would be capable of intercourse without pain, if the pelvic floor muscles could be relaxed.

Described as an involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the entrance to the vagina, it can make penetration either painful or impossible and cause much distress to the individual.

Women who suffer from vaginismus find that attempts at sexual intercourse are very painful or unsuccessful. This involuntary contraction of the muscles surrounding the entrance to the vagina, makes the muscles around the vagina shut down and prevents her partner from penetrating, it feels like he has hit a brick wall.

Thought to affect at least 2 to 4 per cent of ?women generally, it's more common among women who are saving themselves for marriage. It is also commonly seen in women, who due to religious or cultural reasons, have developed an overriding fear of penetrative sex.

To suggest that if you wanted to remain a virgin you are going to end up with vaginismus wouldn't be right.?

It's mainly the fear of sexual intercourse.

It can and does effect women brought up in restrictive religious environments who can develop unhealthy attitudes toward sex.

Any sex before marriage is considered dirty, filthy, mortal sin, etcetera. But in marriage it is beautiful, it's God's gift.

And women believe this stuff, they believe that sex is grubby on the morning of their wedding day, but by evening the earth will move and fireworks will go off.

Which rarely happens!

More serious than a lacklustre sexual experience, women who suffer from vaginismus often feel confused and inadequate, which only compounds the disorder's psychological underpinning.

This is the most extreme sexual problem because they're not having no orgasm with sex or whatever, they're not having sex.?

It's a devastating problem.?

And many of these women will say, 'What did I save myself for?'"?

As this often will be experienced on, or after, the wedding night one can imagine how distressing this is for a couple who just can't understand what is happening to them. They waited so long and now sex is impossible and they are not able to consummate their marriage. Also the women often believe it is their fault and blame themselves or their partner who will then feel frustrated, rejected or inadequate.

It is also such a taboo topic that they often are too embarrassed to discuss the issue with their family or friends and suffer in silence. Some couples take years before they finally look for help.

While a religious upbringing is a common thread found in many cases, it's not the only link. Women subjected to sexual abuse can develop similar problems, as can individuals who have developed a fear of childbirth.

Some women have a fear of childbirth, primarily due to the pain. I've seen women come to see me whose mothers have died giving birth to them. Think about that algorithm: sex, pregnancy, childbirth, death. You've got the devil's job in psychotherapy to get them away from this notion of sex and death.

Though the issue is common, many women are reluctant to seek treatment and those that do are often steered in the wrong direction by doctors who aren't educated on the subject.

I know of some women who have been misdiagnosed by unskilled or unscrupulous physicians who suggest they undergo a hymenectomy - or Fenton's procedure ? to widen the entrance to the vagina.?

I also suggests that some specialists are even partially responsible for it in the first place, citing how a heavy-handed bedside manner can lead to long-lasting insecurities.

If someone says during a vaginal examination, "Oh, gee, you're small down here. You're going to have trouble down here when you want to have babies,"?some women store that away and talk themselves into it."?

Not the best way to assure a woman who already has difficulties with her self esteem and mental well-being!

The condition is treatable.?

The first step towards treating the problem, is to help an individual become more knowledgeable and comfortable about her own body.?

While many of my more religious clients are intelligent and educated they're not always so well informed when it comes to their own bodies.

Vaginismus is reasonably easy to overcome the more they understand.

I suggest that they get a mirror and look at their vagina because many of these women have never seen it before ... I treat by counselling, education, anxiety reduction, pelvic floor exercises and retraining of pelvic floor muscles. It may take some months of physiotherapy sessions and practice at home but the success rate of therapy is very high when individuals and couples commit to treatment.

?

One of my previous counselling clients, ?a 21-year-old girl who comes from a strict religious back ground.?Had previously visited her GP after she found out that it was impossible to have penetrative sex with her boyfriend. This GP, who obviously did not recognise the nature of her problem, referred the young woman to a gynaecologist.?

My client was devastated, the thought of having an operation on "that part" of her body made her petrified.?

We had a counselling session where I made her aware of the condition called ??vaginismus? and how it affects women and that the condition was fully treatable without the need of any surgery.

As it is a ?psychological? condition and fully treatable

Needless to say she was greatly relieved and undertook a four month treatment program with me and was eventually able to enjoy full sexual intercourse with her boy friend.?

Please note here, I suggested that her boyfriend be involved in this process to which she agreed.?

Not only did he become educated about the condition she was suffering from, he was fully supportive of her and helped with my guidance, to overcome her fears of anxiety around penetrative sexual intercourse.

With the boyfriend being involved and him being supportive it helped build trust and deepen the intimacy in their relationship and the bond between them stronger and more loving.

Both sexually experienced and inexperienced women can develop vaginismus.?

Primary vaginismus occurs when a woman has never, at any time, been able to have pain-free intercourse.?

They often are unable to insert anything: the doctor's finger or speculum, when they need a Pap smear or vaginal examination; their own or partner's finger; or even a tampon.

Secondary vaginismus occurs when a woman who previously has enjoyed intercourse without pain, develops the condition later.?

It can be triggered by a traumatic experience like a difficult child birth, sexual assault or painful experiences with intercourse due to underlying conditions such endometriosis, pelvic or vaginal infections, low sexual arousal with lack of lubrication, menopausal dryness or other vulva conditions.

Vaginismus is treated by counselling, education, anxiety reduction, pelvic floor exercises and retraining of the pelvic floor muscles.?

Psycho sexual education is important as it is essential that the woman gains knowledge of her sexual anatomy. Women who suffer from vaginismus are often raised in moral or religious homes, schools or institutions and, after a childhood of anti-sexual messages, it can be very difficult to face sexual interaction and accept sexual pleasure, even within a loving relationship.

Through counselling by an experienced sex therapist, the sufferer is able to free herself of the negative moral understandings that contribute to her condition.?Post counselling I refer my clients to an experienced pelvic floor physiotherapist who specialises in this area. The treatment of vaginismus involves unlearning the fear-contraction reflex and learning to keep the pelvic floor muscles relaxed during intercourse.

Successful treatment does not require drugs, surgery or any complex invasive techniques.?

Some plastic surgeons have been injecting Botox, a procedure that none of my clients ever contemplated and, in my opinion, should be regarded as a last resort.

What can men do to help their wives/partners through vaginismus?

Men can help their partners in many ways through the process of successfully overcoming vaginismus.

When the trial of vaginismus hits, men often feel helpless, thinking ?What can I do about it??

Vaginismus, however, is not just a woman?s problem ? it is a couple?s problem.

The truth is there are a number of things men can do to help.?

By becoming educated about the dynamics of vaginismus and being emotionally supportive of their partners, men can help their spouses to be more positive and proceed through treatment more quickly.?

The trial may be hard to endure, but it is not hopeless. Once the condition is diagnosed and treatment begins, success is the likely outcome.

Some of the ways men can help their partners include:

1. Being supportive ? A supportive, loving relationship based on encouragement and mutual respect provides an excellent backdrop for a woman to work through the program. It can be physically and emotionally draining for women to walk through some of the steps alone. When men encourage and support their partners, it allows them to focus on the program instead of on immediate relationship concerns. Supportcan be paramount to a woman?s success. Men should consider simply asking their spouses how they would like them to be involved. By participating in and helping with the treatment, spouses have the opportunity to be part of something that draws them closer as a couple. It can be an incredible opportunity and feeling to be part of another?s healing process, especially when the other person is someone deeply cared for.

2. Walking the steps together ? Men can help their spouses by walking together with them through each step of the treatment. Working through the steps together helps men fully understand the mechanics of treatment and aids them in understanding where their partners are both emotionally and physically. Helping their partners work through areas of fear and confusion heightens bonds of trust as couples get to know each other in more intimate ways going beyond intercourse. When men become educated about vaginismus themselves, they are able to talk to their partners knowledgeably and rationally. Men can help their partners stay motivated, focused and moving forward through emotional hurdles, stress and feelings of failure. Participating willingly and knowledgeably in those exercises that involve them directly also helps smooth the transition from painful intercourse or penetration problems.

3. Celebrating success ? What may seem like a small step to men may actually be a huge victory to women going through treatment for vaginismus. Small gifts such as going out to dinner, buying a small present, writing a congratulation note, or giving a massage, etc. may help encourage women through the process. Celebrating and making each victory feel special will help spouses to view the process as being worth the challenge. When men are showing interest and positive excitement about progress it helps women stay motivated to continue moving forward.

4. Staying positive and patient ? As men often await anxiously for their spouses to progress through steps, there is a tendency to project pressure and negativity which can play on their spouse?s feelings of stress and failure. Men should try to stay positive and patient in their attitude, maintaining a hopeful, balanced outlook. Being strong and steady, during periods where spouses feel weak or vulnerable, creates an assured environment that helps women to feel more confident and hopeful.

5. Continuing to be intimate ? We urge couples to continue to share an intimate lifestyle even if intercourse is not possible yet (note that during early steps of the program intercourse should not attempted). Complete avoidance of sexual contact generally amplifies relational troubles and makes the problems worse. Without physical contact, feelings of fear, shame, guilt, or rejection tend to accumulate.?

6. Men can attempt to foster a continuous, viable sex life, temporarily without intercourse, by seeking alternative ways to give and accept pleasure with their spouses. One of the positive aspects of vaginismus for couples is learning to please each other in ways not previously considered. Sensual body touch and manual stimulation can reduce tension and form trust. While going through the early treatment steps, it is best to remove the pressure to perform penetrative intercourse from the sexual equation, however it is important to form intimate bonds through other sexual intimacy options.

7. Not becoming overly passive ? There is a tendency for men with spouses facing vaginismus to become overly passive and to ?bury? their sexual nature and desires for intimacy. When attempts to consummate or develop sexual intimacy fail and cause their spouses ongoing anxiety or sadness, there is a natural tendency to bury these desires to avoid further anguish. If men become overly passive, they may not advocate for their own needs and if continued may allow their spouses to procrastinate on treatment and amplify relational problems.?

I recommend that men try to calmly, but firmly, encourage their spouses to move forward with treatment. Men need to advocate for themselves too, and insist for resolution of the sexual component for the relationship to function properly on a long-term basis.?

As vaginismus treatment is highly successful, it is unnecessary for men to take a position of life-long suffering and sacrifice.?

Sexless marriages generally weigh heavily on both partners and usually result in failed relationships and/or emotional damage if nothing is done to restore the sexual component and bring healing. For these reasons, we encourage men to take responsibility and continue gently advocating for restoration.

A Positive Future

Fortunately, vaginismus is a condition that has positive treatment solutions (as opposed to other debilitating conditions with few treatment options). Couples are elated at reaching treatment completion and pain and penetration problems are no longer an issue. For previously unconsummated couples, going from impossible intercourse to having full, pain free intercourse is a realistic, normal outcome.

Going through the trials of vaginismus can definitely test a relationship, but successfully going through treatment together can also strengthen it. Encouragement, love, patience, and communication can go a long way in helping to sustain relationships. By overcoming together, couples will be able to begin afresh in creating new and pleasurable sexual experiences and enjoy a strengthened relationship in the process.

I would like to make the public and the media aware of this condition as I realise that very few people know about it.

I also would like to hear from women who have had bad experiences.

Next time when you have an appointment with your GP or gynaecologist, ask them if they know what vaginismus is?

Unhappy Marriage? Try Sex Therapy

Sex provides a couple with pleasure, vulnerability and a deep, close connection that is very important to experience in an intimate partnership.?

It's also an important time-out and stress reliever from the mundane tasks and pressures of daily life. An unfulfilled sex life can become a big issue that can erode even the healthy parts of your marriage.?

If you or your partner is having sexual issues, it is best to deal with them directly, honestly -- and with the help of a professional.

Sex therapy is a specific type of therapy for couples and individuals that focuses on the sexual functioning of either the couple or an individual.?

When some couples deal with conflict and communication issues within their relationship, their sexual lives become more active and connected because of the increase in positive, loving feelings for their partner.?

Other couples, however, find that the real problem is not communication or conflict, but simply sexual dysfunction. These couples need a very direct approach, with concrete homework and an increased understanding of human sexuality.

Sex therapists have a much higher degree of knowledge than most about the physiological processes that are a part of human sexuality.?

In a very small number of cases, a separate "sexual surrogate" therapist may be needed, but most often, sex therapy is talk therapy with a cognitive-behavioral leaning, which can include homework assignments for one or both members of the couple.

So: How can sex therapy help you.?

Here's a short list:

People with sexual-identity issues.

Couples who want to increase sexual intimacy.

People who want to deal with sexual inhibitions.

People who are dissatisfied with their sexual functioning (i.e., they have erectile dysfunction or low libido, vaginismus).

Couples wanting to increase their communication about sexuality.

Isaac makes second landfall, levee overtopped in Plaquemines Parish

The center of Hurricane Isaac made a second landfall over Port Fourchon, La., early Wednesday, overtopping a levee southeast of New Orleans, knocking down trees and cutting power to more than 400,000 homes.

There were no reports of injuries as dawn broke over the Gulf Coast area. Property damage reports were just beginning to come in. There were scattered reports of people stranded in their homes by rising water in the New Orleans area.

"I've got a four-by-four hole in my roof, several pieces in the front yard, the back wall of my house moved a couple of feet, and with each gust of wind, it's like you're breathing in and out," William Harold "Billy" Nungesser, president of Plaquemines Parish, said today on "Good Morning America."

Nungesser said some people are stranded in the flood.

"They're stranded at this time, one of the residents that is probably several thousand feet from them has taken a boat and is attempting to rescue them," said Nungesser.

Nungesser confirmed that a levee in Plaquemines Parish was overtopped with water, causing flooding.

"The water came up so quickly and overtopped the levees from Breakaway to White Ditch on the east back of the north end of the parish. It's an area that we called for a mandatory evacuation."

The hurricane promised to lend even more solemnity to commemoration ceremonies Wednesday for Katrina's 1,800 dead in Louisiana and Mississippi, including the tolling of the bells at St. Louis Cathedral overlooking New Orleans' Jackson Square. This storm is far less powerful at Category 1 than Katrina, which caused at least $81 billion in damage and was rated as the most powerful Category 5 storm.

As of 6 a.m., Isaac was still packing winds of 80 mph and the eye of the storm is about 50 miles south-southwest of New Orleans. Isaac is moving at just 6 mph and has already dropped more than six inches of rain on New Orleans during the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane force winds extend 60 miles from the center of the storm.

The hurricane had moved back into the Gulf of Mexico after making its initial landfall Tuesday evening. Isaac's center remained over water where it was almost stationary before making landfall again this morning.

The 200-mile wide hurricane is expected to gradually weaken and move inland, dumping seven to 14 inches of rain across Louisiana, with some places receiving up to 20 inches, according to forecasters.

The greatest concern is an expected storm surge of between six and 12 feet off the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts, four to eight feet along the Alabama coast and three to six feet on the Florida Panhandle, according to the Hurricane Center located in Miami, Fla.

A storm surge of 11 feet was reported at Shell Beach, La., late Tuesday while a surge of 6.7 feet was reported in Waveland, Miss., according to the Hurricane Center.

In Mississippi, highway U.S. 90 was closed in sections by storm surge flooding. At one spot in Biloxi, a foot of water covered the in-town highway for a couple of blocks and it looked like more was coming in. High tide around 9:30 a.m. was likely to bring up more water.

The highest wind gust was recorded at 113 miles an hour overnight in Belle Chasse, Plaquemines Parish, La.

Thursday night into Saturday, Isaac will move into the Mississippi Valley and eventually into Illinois and Indiana with possibly six inches of rain for the drought-stricken Midwest.

Isolated tornadoes are possible along the central Gulf Coast region and part of the lower Mississippi River Valley through Wednesday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Entergy New Orleans has listed more than 400,000 homes and businesses without power as of 5:30 a.m., according to their website. The Red Cross reported 18,000 people in 70 shelters across five states Wednesday morning.

When Isaac came ashore at 7:45 p.m. ET Tuesday, it dumped heavy rain with that spread 60 miles from Isaac's center. The highest wind gust reported in New Orleans was 71 mph at Lakefront Airport.

While traffic was nearly invisible Tuesday night, a few French Quarter bars remained open and filled with locals in New Orleans. At Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop -- the 150-year old dive at the end of Bourbon Street -- Chris LaRue recommended the four staples of hurricane preparedness, "Water, canned food, candles and booze."

"We're going to have some water to clean up," said LaRue. "But this kind of wind is nothing."

In advance of the storm, Louisiana set up shelters and stockpiled more than a million packaged meals, 1.4 million bottles of water and 17,000 tarps.

Since the levees failed in Katrina seven years ago, more than $14 billion has been spent on the 133 miles of floodwalls, spillways, gates and pumps surrounding New Orleans.

The hurricane promised to lend even more solemnity to commemoration ceremonies Wednesday for Katrina's 1,800 dead in Louisiana and Mississippi, including the tolling of the bells at St. Louis Cathedral overlooking New Orleans' Jackson Square.

ABC News' Max Golembo and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

(AP) ? Kim Kardashian has settled a lawsuit against Old Navy claiming the clothing retailer violated her publicity rights by using a lookalike in an ad.

Kardashian sued over the spot in July 2011, claiming the company's use of a model who looked like her might confuse consumers about her actual endorsements, which include a clothing store and shoe line.

No details about the settlement were filed with the court.

"The lawsuit was resolved to the mutual satisfaction of the parties," the two sides said in a joint statement.

The lawsuit was over a commercial titled "Super C-U-T-E," which featured Canadian singer-model Melissa Molinaro. The ad began airing in February 2011 and was still being used in some of the company's promotions months later, Kardashian's lawsuit stated.

An attorney for Old Navy said at a January hearing that Molinaro was famous in her own right and her appearance in the ad wasn't intended to draw similarities to the reality TV starlet.

Kardashian's attorney Gary Hecker contended that some news outlets and Twitter users noted similarities in the women's appearances.

Kardashian, 31, was seeking unspecified damages and an order barring Old Navy from using a lookalike model again.

Obama participates in surprise Reddit chat

President Obama participates in an online chat, Aug. 29. 2012. (Reddit)

President Obama made a surprise appearance online on Wednesday, participating in a live chat on Reddit.com.

"Hi, I'm Barack Obama, President of the United States," Obama wrote in a message on the site. "Ask me anything."

The post prompted immediate skepticism about its authenticity, so the commander in tweet offered some proof, posting a message on Twitter linking to the Reddit chat and providing a "verification photo" (above) featuring the president typing on his MacBook Air One.

The chat?part of Reddit's "Ask Me Anything" series?was prefaced with a message from Obama about Isaac:

Hey everybody - this is barack. Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover.

More than 10,000 questions were submitted; President Obama responded to eight of them?mostly those that were popular among (and promoted by) Reddit users. Like this one: "What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?"

Obama's response:

The decision to surge our forces in afghanistan. Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to afghan lead?so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget.

Another: "What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?"

Obama's reply:

Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress?to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.

This being an online chat, President Obama was asked about the issue of Internet freedom?and keeping the World Wide Web free.

"We know how Republicans feel about protecting Internet Freedom," the user "SharkGirl" wrote. "Is Internet Freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform?"

"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too," Obama responded. "We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody?from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although there will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle?and it will be reflected in the platform."

He was also asked about the U.S. space program:

Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level?so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight.

That answer prompted a nerdy exchange about grammar.

"An asteroid, Mr. President," the user "s0crates82" wrote.

"Don't correct the President, neckbeard," the user "Whoa_Chill_Bro" replied.

Home Equity Conversion Mortgage: The New Kid on the Reverse ...

Home Equity Conversion Mortgage:? The New Kid on the Reverse Mortgage Block

Image credit: olegdoroshin / 123RF Stock Photo

Reverse mortgages are becoming very popular these days.? Now there?s a new kid on the mortgage block ? the Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM).? This new option is especially convenient for Baby Boomer home owners who are looking to upgrade or downsize without being saddled by a large mortgage payment.

Overview of the HECM Option

As with most financial programs, there are some basic requirements that you must meet in order to be eligible.?

  • First, you must be at least 62 years of age.?
  • Secondly, you?ll need enough equity in your current home to cover the remainder of the purchase price of your new home that isn?t covered by the HECM funds.
  • No other loans can be used to assist in the purchase of your new home.
  • And finally, your new home must be used as your primary residence (i.e. it can?t be for a vacation, weekend or rental home) and you must occupy it within 60 days of purchase

As with most reverse mortgages, it?s the combination of your age and the value of your home that determines how much you can expect to receive.? With the HECM you?ll have full ownership of the new home with no monthly mortgage payments owed.

Basic Advantages to the HECM

Unlike many of the reverse mortgage programs currently available, the HECM program is backed by the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).? This federally insured backing offers an additional level of safety and security for potential program participants.

As it is federally backed, the FHA requires that all HECM applicants participate in a mortgage counseling review.? This review ensures that applicants wishing to take part in the program can not only afford, but also understand all the requirements, risks and benefits associated with the HECM program.

That being said, there are several notable perks to the HECM program:

  • There are no credit or income requirements (only age and house equity requirements)
  • Once you obtain your new residence, you may remain in it as long as your choose to
  • The HECM loan isn?t required to be paid back until you either sell your home or die

How to Start the Process

If you are ready to start the process of applying for an HECM, you should contact Housing and Urban Development (HUD) by phone, in person or via their website.? You can also find out additional information on how to get started at Bank of the Internet ? a fabulous resource for anyone interested in the reverse mortgage option.

Either way, it?s always best practice to consult a qualified financial planner before beginning the process of applying for a reverse mortgage.? A qualified planner will be able to review your situation and guide you through the process of selecting the best reverse mortgage option for you.

Brisbane Psychologist - How To Cope With Grief Resulting From ...

Mourning can take a long time ranging from a few weeks to several years. However the experience of losing a loved one remains with a person their whole lives. There are a number of ways of dealing with grief according to Brisbane psychologist.

i. Give your self enough time to come to terms with the loss. Do not rush your grief but spend time with others who you trust and talk about what you feel.

ii. Accept the show condolence from others regardless of how awkward they might be. It will help to strengthen the bond with others experiencing the same loss.

iii. Rest and give yourself treats that help you relax. Take hot baths, get involved in a communal project, cycle, take hikes, have afternoon naps, have your favorite meal and so on. This will help you not only help you to deal with the exhaustion but it also distracts you from the grief.

iv. ? Set short-term goals for things you will do within a period a week or two. These goals will help you to get a sense of continuity. The key to overcoming debilitating grief is to live a day at a time. As time progresses you can then begin to set longer term goals.

v. Seek assistance in handling your responsibilities in the trying period of grief. For instance have a relative come live with you if you have kids. You can also move in with relatives for a time.

vi.

? If you find yourself going back to emotions of intense sadness, don?t be hard on yourself. Grief does not pass completely. Expect this to happen. The frequency and intensity will decrease with time thus the goal is to remain positive.

vii. ? Seek the counsel of people who have gone through the experience of losing a loved one. You are bound to find out that such people will give you a lot of hope no matter how bleak the future might seem.

viii. Avoid all forms of drug and alcohol abuse. These substances can prevent you from coming to terms with the death and resolving your grief. The outcome is dependence on the substances whenever you recall the loss. The avoidance also includes prescription medication that will alter your mood. The best way to deal with grief is to experience it fully.

ix. When making plans for the future give yourself some leeway to change your mind. During the grieving stage it is normal to be uncertain of yourself. Your priorities are bound to change as you adjust to the situation.

The above steps are just some of the simple techniques of dealing with grief. In order to get a more detailed approach you should consider visiting a Brisbane psychologist. This is if you happen to be lining in Waterford, Edens Landing, Loganholme, Slacks Creek or Matterhorn. Grief is an emotion that is quite normal but should not be left to escalate.

Since then we've grown to be the largest alternative press in the area. If you've met any of our crew then you know that we a bunch of hard workers with a passion to represent the community. Who says Akron/Canton/Cleveland is a miserable place to live? Not us. We have one of the best art scenes around, some of the hardest working musicians on the planet, and really great people to fill in everywhere else. We put out a new issue on THE FIRST WEDNESDAY OF EVERY MONTH covering the best art and entertainment found in northeast Ohio. We never miss a beat. Wonder why our mag is choked full of advertisers? Because we know what we're doing. We offer full scale marketing for each and every business that comes to us. We develop marketing campaigns from the ground up, or we'll take over where someone left off. We have the ability to tell everyone about you. And we're open for business. We're not pushy, we're helpful. - Mike (330) 236-5005
