Kane County Chronicle | Mold investigation continues at rec center

ST. CHARLES ? Racquetball courts at the Norris Recreation Center were still sealed Monday as crews continued to investigate the mold found last week in one court, St. Charles School District 303 spokesperson Jim Blaney said.

The rec center, which shares a campus with St. Charles East High School, has been closed to the public since July 30 for annual maintenance and improvements that cannot be done when it is open, such as window replacement and ceiling tile checks. It is scheduled to reopen Aug. 13.

Crews discovered mold in Racquetball Court 3 on Wednesday after coming across a soft spot on an exterior wall while they were sanding and painting, officials have said. Mold was in the wall under the plaster and wall board.

Crews on Monday were still peeling the layers off the walls to learn the extent of the mold growth, Blaney said.

District 303 is sensitive to mold after testing in 2001 showed St. Charles East High School had a toxic mold problem. The mold was believed to be responsible for causing respiratory infections, asthma attacks, migraine headaches, tiredness and dizziness, among other symptoms, in students and employees.

The district spent more than $29 million to remove the mold, and the school was closed for 18 months.

Although the high school and recreational center share a campus, the fitness facility was not part of the mold remediation, officials have said.

The district manages the Norris Recreation Center at 1050 Dunham Road, but the facility is supervised by its own board of directors.
