Couple spends $155,000 to clone deceased dog

For roughly the price of a home, the Ottos bought a genetic duplicate of their beloved dog, Sir Lancelot.

You can't put a price on love, but Edgar and Nina Otto came up with a number when they bid on a second chance with their late pooch, Sir Lancelot.

Of course, there's no such thing as a true second chance, but in TLC's latest installment of "I Cloned My Pet," the Ottos confessed to spending $155,000 on a genetically identical match of the dog they missed so much.

"We didn't expect him to die," Edgar said of the 11-year-old golden Labrador retriever that fell to cancer in 2008. "He was much too young."

In a sneak peek for the upcoming special, Nina revealed a display cabinet filled with the cremains of several past pets, but like Edgar, it was Sir Lancelot who she clearly missed the most.

"It just broke my heart," she said of his illness. "The idea that he was actually going to be gone, that I couldn't live with."

That's why the couple had a sample of Sir Lancelot's genetic material saved after he died. And it's why, just eight months later, they placed an auction bid big enough to buy a house in order to ensure they could have a copy of their dearly departed pal.

"Our winning bid of $155,000 topped them all," Edgar said.

Nina would have gone even higher than that in the pursuit of a new Lancelot. "I would have done anything at that point," she admitted.

But that was all it took. Three years ago, the couple welcomed the addition of their new-old companion.
